Harris Corporation Reports Strong Fiscal 2019 First Quarter Results With Accelerated Revenue Growth Across All Segments | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

    MELBOURNE, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

  • Revenue up 9% to $1.5 billion with a book-to-bill of 1.3
  • EPS from continuing operations up 31% to $1.78
  • Operating cash flow up 23% to $117 million; free cash flow1up 19% to $86 million
  • Increased fiscal 2019 EPS from continuing operations guidance to $7.80 - $7.90
  • Harris Corporation (HRS) reported fiscal 2019 first quarter revenue of $1.5 billion, up 9% compared with the prior year. Earnings per diluted share (EPS) from continuing operations increased 31% to $1.78. Net income increased 34% to $213 million and earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT2) increased 12% to $300 million.

"We are off to a strong start in fiscal 2019 with solid first quarter results and the highest revenue and EPS growth we have achieved in eight years," said William M. Brown, chairman, president and chief executive officer. "First quarter revenue and backlog were up in all segments and EBIT margin expanded 40 bps. We also increased our dividend by 20% and returned $282 million to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases. These results, combined with the recent approval of a well-funded budget, give us confidence to increase fiscal 2019 EPS guidance.

“Over the past few years, we have executed well against our strategic priorities, reshaping our portfolio to focus on technology differentiated businesses and returning to growth. The transformative merger of equals announced today will enable us to increase our scale, strengthen our core businesses and extend our position as a premier global defense technology company."

    Summary Financial Results

First quarter revenue increased 9%, with solid growth across all three segments led by Communication Systems and Electronic Systems. EPS increased 31% from the benefit of higher volume, strong program execution and a lower share count and tax rate. EBIT margin3 expanded 40 bps to 19.5%. Book-to-bill remained strong at 1.3 resulting in a funded backlog increase of 14% year over year.

    Communication Systems

            ($ millions) First Quarter FY 2019 FY 2018 Change Revenue $ 469 $ 406 16% Operating income $ 140 $ 115 22% Operating margin 29.9 % 28.3 % 160bps

Revenue increased 16% from double-digit growth in all three businesses: Tactical Communications, Public Safety and Night Vision. In Tactical Communications, DoD was up 31% on strong readiness demand and International was up 2% from growth in the Middle East and Asia Pacific. Operating income grew 22% and margins expanded 160 bps from volume leverage and operational efficiencies, partially offset by mix. Book-to-bill was strong at 1.4, with Tactical Communications book-to-bill of 1.5 and a funded backlog greater than $1 billion.

Tactical Communications received several significant awards to support U.S. Army modernization, meet U.S. DoD readiness demand and combat evolving international threats:

  • $58 million for handheld, manpack and HF radios for the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Army Security Assistance Brigades to support readiness demand
  • $116 million from countries in Europe including $53 million from Ukraine supporting the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative to modernize communications to meet emerging threats in the region
  • Public Safety received over $120 million in awards as it continued to strengthen its position in utilities and state, local and federal agencies. Awards included over $40 million from Nevada Energy and Washoe County, Nevada to design and build a statewide shared radio system, and $15 million from the U.S. Army under the previously announced $495 million IDIQ.

    Electronic Systems

            ($ millions) First Quarter FY 2019 FY 2018 Change Revenue $ 589 $ 541 9% Operating income $ 115 $ 109 6% Operating margin 19.5 % 20.1 % (60)bps

Revenue increased for the sixth consecutive quarter, up 9%, from growth in Avionics on increased F-35 production, in Electronic Warfare (EW) from F/A-18 and CV-22 platforms, and from the ramp of the U.K. robotics program and growth in missile defense programs in C4ISR. Operating income grew 6% to $115 million. Book-to-bill of 1.2 was driven by strength in EW and Avionics.

Harris continued to strengthen its position in electronic warfare and avionics on long-term platforms. The company was awarded a $255 million sole-source IDIQ to deliver upgraded countermeasure electronic warfare systems primarily for the B-52 platform, with an initial task order of $99 million. This award follows successful performance on a $260 million development program to meet the evolving electronic warfare needs of the B-52 platform. In addition, Harris was selected to provide the Open Systems Mission Processor as part of the third Technology Refresh program for the F-35, continuing to expand Harris’ content on this major platform.

Harris also leveraged its long partnership and excellent performance on the FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure program to capture a 5-year, $1.4 billion contract extension. Under this extension, Harris will continue to provide highly reliable and critical voice and data communications for National Airspace System operations at more than 4,400 FAA, U.S. DoD and National Weather Service facilities.

Revenue increased 5%, as double-digit growth from classified programs, driven by small satellites and exquisite systems, was partially offset by expected lower revenue from environmental programs. Operating income decreased 1% to $86 million as higher volume was offset by increased investments in innovation. Book-to-bill was strong at 1.3.

    Story Continues

In classified programs, Harris continues to gain momentum in ground processing capabilities and small satellite technology. The company received $79 million in follow-on funding for a ground-based adjacency contract initially awarded in fiscal 2017, increasing the total program value to $200 million; and received three additional small satellite awards supporting new customers, each with potential to grow to over $100 million. Harris also was awarded a $500 million IDIQ from the Defense Intelligence Agency for missions on the HELIOS program.

In environmental programs, Harris extended its strong position on the GOES-R program, receiving an additional $33 million in program sustainment funding and a $34 million contract modification to provide software usability modifications, mission enhancements and post-launch support for the enterprise ground system.

    Non-GAAP Financial Measures

This press release contains non-GAAP financial measures within the meaning of Regulation G promulgated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”), including free cash flow for the first quarters of fiscal 2019 and 2018, in each case excluding cash flow for capital expenditures, and earnings before interest and taxes ("EBIT") and EBIT margin for the first quarters of fiscal 2019 and 2018, in each case excluding discontinued operations, net of income taxes. A “non-GAAP financial measure” is generally defined as a numerical measure of a company’s historical or future performance that excludes or includes amounts, or is subject to adjustments, so as to be different from the most directly comparable measure calculated and presented in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”). Harris management believes that these non-GAAP financial measures, when considered together with the GAAP financial measures, provide information that is useful to investors in understanding period-over-period operating results separate and apart from items that may, or could, have a disproportionately positive or negative impact on results in any particular period. Harris management also believes that these non-GAAP financial measures enhance the ability of investors to analyze Harris business trends and to understand Harris performance. In addition, Harris may utilize non-GAAP financial measures as guides in forecasting, budgeting and long-term planning processes and to measure operating performance for some management compensation purposes. Non-GAAP financial measures should be considered in addition to, and not as a substitute for, or superior to, financial measures presented in accordance with GAAP.

Review: Nimble's batteries and wireless chargers offer eco-friendly designs with low specs at high prices | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

Mophie is well-known for both the quality of its products and the hefty price tag attached to them, so we were interested when we heard that a handful of ex-Mophie employees had splintered off to start a new, eco-mindful power accessory company called Nimble. With consumer cost-cutting recyclable packaging and a focus on renewable materials, we were curious to see if Nimble could disrupt the battery and charger status quo — a highly competitive market. Unfortunately, Nimble's specs and prices just can't beat the competition.

We reviewed both Nimble's extensive collection of batteries and its wireless charging accessories — a much more interesting subject now that Google has bequeathed the Pixels with Qi. Unfortunately for all of us, we found Nimble's batteries to carry a premium in price that wasn't supported by product performance. Although in most cases we were impressed with the style and general build quality, as well as the concept of reduced environmental impact, these batteries and wireless chargers are a tough sell on appearance alone.

Both Richard Gao and Ryne Hager contributed to this review.

    Batteries

Nimble offers batteries/portable chargers (a name I hate) in four sizes named by the number of extra days they provide the average phone. At $50-$100, they're also pretty steeply priced. With a mere 18W output over USB-C, Nimble's batteries don't compare too favorably to other major OEMs at the same price, or the multitudes of random Chinese brands on Amazon. While I dig the overall build quality and aesthetic, I don't think Nimble's batteries are worth it at the MSRP — though we do have an exclusive coupon ( DROID15 ) that gets you an extra 15% off at Nimble's site.

Design, hardware, what's in the box

All the Nimble batteries, from smallest to largest by capacity.

The product schtick for Nimble may be eco-mindful reuse of materials, but it doesn't seem to compromise the build quality of its products. The shell is made of aluminum and a metallic-flecked semi-transparent dark plastic with a soft-touch finish. Nimble is quick to point out the internal plastics are of plant-based origin, but no mention of recycled or natural materials is included when it comes to the TPE part of the body. That's too bad, as I'd have enjoyed seeing how a more eco-friendly shell might have looked, since all of the recycled plastic products I've used have a pleasant matte texture I enjoy.

Although fit between the parts wasn't exactly Apple-precise, it felt durable and high-quality, and I wouldn't be worried about it falling apart or getting too beaten up inside a bag — though you can pull the shell off if you try.

Maybe don't pull too hard (though it snaps back on just fine)

All the batteries have their outputs and inputs aligned along a single edge — objectively the best battery design. I hate it when one is on a different side. Though port numbers and positions vary, all have 2-3  USB Type-A ports paired with a single USB Type-C port for both charging and output, which maxes at 18W. A row of LEDs indicates remaining capacity, with the top LED denoting output by type: green for standard, orange for USB-PD. A button at the top triggers the LEDs to show you the remaining capacity, with a slightly annoying slow-fill animation.

Nimble's other apparent trademark feature is a magnetic cable manager on the butt-end of each battery, and it isn't executed too well. The magnet included in it is pretty weak, and the strap to hold cables itself is far too large. The whole magnetic assembly fell off my batteries pretty much constantly. While it's a cool idea, the execution isn't quite there. Both a stronger magnet and a tighter strap would be needed for it to be useful, as it stands it's not worth keeping on your battery when you toss it in a bag: it'll just fall off.

Battery packaging is made of 100% "scrap paper," optimized for recycling. While I like the idea in the abstract and I enjoy that ostensibly saves consumers money as well, the packaging isn't very durable. The batteries come in a molded cardboard clamshell, and they got a bit beaten up on their way to my door. On one of the larger batteries, a stickers keeping the two halves closed had even ripped open. Nimble seems aware it's a bit of an issue, as the biggest battery comes in a more durable and stereotypical cardboard box. Regardless, none of the batteries were actually harmed in any way during transit.

All of the batteries excluding the biggest one came with the same stuff: a 1' USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable, a bag for recycling old electronics, and a small product manual.

The biggest, 26,000mAh battery comes with a dinky USB Type-C QC 3.0 18W charger and a longer (~3') USB Type-A to Type-C cable. I find it a bit funny that the included charger is advertised as Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 when the repeated marketing focus on battery input/output is USB Power Delivery.

I also had some reliability issues with the USB Type-C port on the biggest battery. After a while, it stopped liking all of my USB Type-C cables, and I had to be careful not to jostle it while it was charging, or it was prone to disconnect. The other batteries had no such issue, though.

Nimble's batteries include a 12-month warranty, which is the bare minimum for batteries, in my opinion. Many OEMs provide 12-18 month warranties with additional extensions after product registration, and for Nimble's premium pricing, I expected them to stand by their products for a longer period.

    Metrics/Tests

We tested all four batteries in our usual fashion, measuring watt-hours (over [email protected] 5V/2.4A), max input, and max output across port types:

    Capacity 10,000mAh 13,000mAh 20,000mAh 26,0000mAh Max input V (USB-C) 8.9V 8.9V 8.9V 8.9V Max input A (USB-C) 2A 2.1A 2.3A 2A Max Input W (USB-C) 17.8W 18.7W 20.5W 17.8W Max output V (USB-C) 11.6V 11.7V 11.6V 11.7V Max output A (USB-C) 1.4A 1.4A 1.4A 1.4A Max output W (USB-C) 16.4W 16.4W 16.2W 16.4W Max output V (USB-A) 4.8V 4.8V 4.8V 4.8V Max output A (USB-A) 2.3A 2.3A 2.3A 2.3A Max output W (USB-A) 11W 11W 11W 11W Watt hours over USB-A 30.2 39.8 61 83.8

There is one major inconsistency I'd like to note, and that is the USB-A ports that aren't labeled as "Fast Charge." Although every battery had the same sort of output on those fast charging ports, the other USB-A port performance varied greatly, not just across batteries, but between ports on the unit itself. Some of the ports could spit up to 2.4 A, while others couldn't exceed 1A.

Not all of the USB-A ports behave the same even excluding the "Fast Charge" port.

The batteries charge at a pretty constant 9V off of USB-PD, if they can get it, dropping amperage with time. None of my phones ever seemed to be able to negotiate anything over 5V on USB-C, but my MacBook Pro was able to hit 12V.

The QC 3.0 charger included with the largest battery hit a maximum of 8.8V and 1.9A, in my testing. It also didn't seem to negotiate using USB-PD according to my tester, though that could also be user error (I recently got a new device specifically for testing PD compatibility, and I'm still acclimating to it).

    Should you buy one?

Probably not. Nimble charges way too much for these batteries considering their maximum output. 18W of power over USB-C is pretty basic — it isn't even enough to charge a laptop while it's actively being used — and almost every battery from the last ~5 years with 2.4A output comes close to that. For less money, you can get batteries with USB-PD that hit 30W from other OEMs. For just a bit more you can get something like RAVPower's 27,000mAh battery,  which has a similar ~15W USB Type-C output and a 70W AC outlet (and it was actually cheaper than Nimble's biggest battery when we had a coupon for it).

If these Nimble batteries could hit 30W or 45W over USB-C, I'd consider them to be more reasonably priced, but across all four battery sizes, there are cheaper options with the same or better specs. Our exclusive 15% discount via coupon DROID15 makes it a bit of a better deal, but unless the design really appeals to you, other choices consistently beat these batteries in a comparison of pure specifications — and all at lower prices.

With the savings ostensibly being presented from the use of recycled materials and environmentally friendly, minimalist packaging, Nimble's prices feel disingenuous. While I enjoyed the build quality, overall aesthetic, and use of premium materials like aluminum and non-gross TPE (too many companies use gross soft-touch black rubber), Nimble's pricing is nonetheless unrealistic. The additional features built-in also fall flat: The magnetic cable management is pointless considering how weak the magnet is and how loose the flap to secure cables is, and the super slow LED indicator animations were frustrating every time I had to check battery levels.

Nimble needs to bump its output levels or drop prices to get my unreserved recommendation.

Interested parties can purchase the batteries directly from Nimble, or via Amazon.

  • Wireless chargers

Nimble technically offers four wireless charging products: Wireless Pad, Wireless Dual Pad, Wireless Stand, and Wireless Travel Kit. However, there are really only three charging pads; the Travel Kit simply contains the Wireless Pad and a larger dual-port wall plug that, when put together with the pad, forms a sort of box that the charging cable can be nestled in. Of this quartet, there aren't any that I would particularly recommend unless you really dig the aesthetic.

Design, hardware, what's in the box

As we've seen from the batteries, Nimble places a strong emphasis on their product design. The same is true for its wireless chargers; everything is wrapped in fabric that the company says is "made from organic hemp and recycled plastic bottles, and constructed with plant-based bioplastics derived from corn, sugarcane and other naturally occurring starchy fibers." The grip pads on the bottom are made of soft-touch TPE, and they, too, are pretty special. TPE supposedly requires little energy to produce, and Nimble infuses mica crystals in each pad to create a 1-of-1 speckle design for each unit. The brand, specs, and regulatory markings are engraved in the bottom.

    The Wireless Pad.

The eco-friendliness continues with the packaging, which is the same 100% scrap paper cardboard that the batteries arrive in. I personally didn't have any issues with the boxes arriving damaged, though they're not the most premium-feeling. Truthfully, I felt like I was opening egg cartons, but hey, you can't complain about saving the world.

I'm a fan of what Nimble's done with the materials. The fabric offers a nice texture, and the TPE below keeps the pad from moving around. The rounded corners make for a nice, seamless appearance. Everything feels solid and well put-together, which is often not the case for charging products. Most of the wireless charging pads I currently have use glossy black plastic. That looks alright when new, but it scratches and scuffs rather easily. I don't see that happening with fabric. Unfortunately, the wall plug is glossy plastic, but you're not going to see much of that anyway. At least it has Nimble's elephant logo on it.

    The Wireless Dual Pad.

The Wireless Pad, Wireless Dual Pad, and Wireless Stand each have one USB-C input, as well as a small indicator light that shows when something is charging. All three support 10W fast wireless charging for phones like Samsung's flagships from the Galaxy S6 onwards, as well as 7.5W charging for iPhones from the 8/X onwards. Other phones will default to 5W. The Wireless Pad and Wireless Stand also each have one 5V/1A USB-A output, but that's something that I don't imagine many people using given how underpowered it is. Perhaps it could be good for charging your smartwatch or Bluetooth earbuds, but not much else. It should also be noted that the Wireless Dual Pad can have a maximum of 10W across both pads. So if you've got two phones that support fast wireless charging on there, they're both going to be stuck at 5W.

    The Wireless Travel Kit.

The two charging pads are pretty self-explanatory, but the Wireless Travel Kit and Wireless Stand probably require some description. The Travel Kit is composed of the Wireless Pad and a large, ~1-inch tall wall brick. Inside the brick — which holds onto the pad magnetically — there are a retractable plug, two USB-A ports with a combined output of up to 5V/3A (one of which is QC3.0), and a cubby to fit a charging cable in. The idea is that you can bring your wireless charger with you when you're on the go. I suppose it's an alright idea if you feel the need to use a wireless charger even when you're on vacation or a business trip, but I doubt many people do.

    Not the most secure.

At this point, I should probably mention that the wall charger portion of the Wireless Travel Kit arrived defective. It wasn't able to to draw power from any of the outlets I tried for longer than a second, so I substituted the very similar QC3.0 bricks included with the other Nimble wireless chargers for testing. Nimble has informed us that an updated version of the Travel Kit will be introduced in the next few weeks, which is why it's currently sold out.

    The Wireless Stand.

The Wireless Stand is something I flat out cannot recommend. It's nothing to do with the charging functionality, as that's identical to the Wireless Pad's, but it's just poorly thought out. Nimble decided to make the stand portions (the base and the kickstand) retractable in order for it to function as both a base and a stand. It's a good idea in theory, and one that Samsung has already done, but it's just not executed well here. The base, or whatever you call the part that the bottom of the phone sits on, is comically small. The kickstand also seems quite weak. My test device was a Galaxy S7, a small phone by today's standards, and it was about to teeter right off. I can't imagine how a Pixel 3 XL or an iPhone XS Max would stably stay on there.

Like the batteries, each wireless charging device, save for the Wireless Travel Kit, came with a Quick Charge 3.0 USB-A wall brick (5V/2.5A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A), a high-quality 1-meter USB-A to USB-C charging cable in grey, a little plastic pouch for recycling old tech, and a small instruction booklet. The Travel Kit didn't come with the QC3.0 brick, as the kit already includes a dual-port QC3.0 wall charger designed to fit with the wireless charging pad. All four offerings are backed by 12-month warranties.

    Metrics/Tests

Since we're dealing with wireless chargers here, this section is going to be less technical than the batteries'. Our test device was a Galaxy S7, which is equipped with Samsung's 10W fast wireless charging tech. For reference, the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL also support a maximum of 10W via wireless.

Using a power meter, we clocked the maximum inputs at around 8.9V/1.1A, or ~10W, for all three Nimble wireless charger models. That means the ratings are right on the money. It's worth noting that the Wireless Dual Pad can only handle a maximum of 10W on both coils, meaning that the maximum speed if you have two phones is 5W for both.

We also used Ampere to verify how the Nimble chargers compared with an OEM Samsung wireless fast charging stand. The maximum input that the app showed was 840mA for the Nimble models, which was about on par with what the Samsung charger showed.

    Should you buy one?

Probably not. Just as we saw with the batteries, Nimble is charging higher-than-average prices given the specs its products are offering. I'm a big fan of the fabric exterior and TPE bases, as well as the environmentally-conscious angle of most of the products. However, few will find these design aspects unique enough to warrant the higher pricing.

The Wireless Pad, at $39.99, is nearly twice as expensive as competitors on Amazon. The $49.99 Wireless Dual Pad isn't as bad, but this $38 dual wireless charging pad not only supports an 18W input (9W on both coils with two phones charging), but also has an additional USB-A output on the charger. The $49.99 Wireless Stand can't be recommended for the same monetary reasons, and that's not to mention how easily it can get knocked over with a phone on it. Lastly, the Wireless Travel Kit doesn't make much sense to me as a product, and at $59.99, it's not well-priced either.

As mentioned previously, Nimble is offering AP readers an exclusive 15% discount with code DROID15. That makes the prices slightly more palatable. If the fabric/TPE construction really speaks to you — and I can't blame you if they do — feel free to go for either the Wireless Pad or Wireless Dual Pad. Even with the coupon, I don't think the Wireless Stand is worth it. The same goes for the Wireless Travel Kit, but that's kind of a moot point given that it's not currently for sale.

What to do With Your Retirement Portfolio in This Volatile Market © TheStreet What to do With Your Retirement Portfolio in This Volatile Market

A subscriber to TheStreet's new premium publication, Retirement Daily, recently wrote to us: "What is the best thing to do with a 401(k) if the market keeps crashing or we go into another recession when I only have a few more years to go before retiring? I need to minimize losses at this point."

This question is asked frequently, especially during stock market volatility the likes of which we've seen this week. And this concern is a common one. If fact, many investors, and especially those on retirement's doorstep, are anxious about the market right now.

Consider, for instance, the results of the most recent Wells Fargo/Gallup Investor Optimism Study, conducted over the summer. That study found that:

  • Most U.S. investors expect stock market volatility to continue throughout 2018 (81%) rather than settle down before year's end (19%).
  • Sixty-five percent say the "worst is ahead of us" in terms of volatility, with 35% saying the "worst is behind us."
  • At least six in 10 agree that volatility has caused them to pay closer attention to their investments (62%) as well as to the market as a whole (59%).
  • Fifty percent surveyed say they're 'very worried' about the impact of the U.S. political climate on our financial markets.
  • That said, let's start with my response and then then we'll provide you with answers from several influential financial advisers. (We have ideas, analysis and suggestions from some of the best advisers and wealth managers in the country. Today, we'll bring you the first three, and the rest tomorrow.)

It's critical that you first craft (either on your own or better yet with the help of a financial adviser) a retirement-income plan. Those who have such a such a plan don't worry about market declines. And those who don't have a plan, worry.

I'll assume that you don't yet have retirement-income plan. If that's the case, let's create one. First, you have to crunch some numbers. Calculate, as best you can, your current and future expenses in retirement (housing, healthcare, transportation and the like). Next, calculate, as best you can, your sources of income in retirement (earned income, Social Security, pensions, retirement accounts, and the like).

To be fair, you might not know how much income to expect from your accounts earmarked for retirement. For sake of argument, let's assume that you can withdraw somewhere between 3% to 4% per year for at least 30 years. Advisers refer to this as the 4% rule, which -- in essence -- is a systematic withdrawal plan or a what advisers refer to as a SWP or SWIP.

If your income matches your expenses, congratulations.

But before you go patting yourself on the back, let's look at a few other strategies and items to factor into your plan.

As we've written in the recent past, advisers use several strategies and tactics to create a retirement-income plans. Besides SWPs, advisers also use something called floor-and-upside, as well as buckets.

With the floor-and-upside approach, some would have you match your guaranteed sources of income (Social Security and a traditional defined-benefit pension plan) to your essential expenses in retirement, and your non-guaranteed sources of income (your personal assets) with your discretionary expenses. And if there was a gap, you would use a portion of your personal assets to make up the difference between your guaranteed sources of income and your risky assets. Some advisers would, for instance, have you purchase a single premium immediate annuity, or SPIA, to cover the gap.

The upside portfolio would be invested in risky assets (stocks) and fund discretionary expenses.

With the bucket strategy, you would match your assets against your liabilities based on time horizons: short-, intermediate- and long-term. There are lots of variations on this approach but the essence of it is this:

  • For those retirement expenses you'll incur over the next one to five years, you would invest in safe and liquid assets. Income would be your primary investment objective.
  • For retirement expenses you'll incur over, say, the next six to 15 years you'll invest in a mix of stocks and bonds. Growth and income would be your investment objective.
  • And for those retirement expenses that you'll incur beyond 15 years, you'd invest in stocks and some bonds. Growth would be your primary investment objective.
  • Besides deciding which strategy to use, you also have to review all the risks you might face in retirement and how'll manage those risks. Read more here.

Once you've addressed all those risks, you can also contemplate how you'll you allocate your assets among the various accounts you might have (tax-deferred, taxable and tax-free) and the various investment and products you could use to accomplish your goals.

Some other things to consider: Your goal is to create the most tax-efficient income in retirement, and doing that might require work and the help of an adviser who can conduct 'what-if' scenarios for you. And second, plan on making course corrections to your plan at least once per year. Tomorrow will not be the same as today even though you think that might be the case.

One last item -- As you think about your portfolio, think about something called your risk capacity: How much money can you afford to lose before it starts to affect how much income you can could withdraw safely from your portfolio to support your standard of living.

So, for instance, if you have a portfolio of $100,000 and you can afford to have it fall to $90,000 you have a risk capacity of $10,000. Learn not only your tolerance for risk as part of this process but calculate your risk capacity as well. Knowing that will give you some peace of mind and less worry about losing money before you retire.

Now, what to do our advisers have to say?

Dirk Cotton, Financial Planner, The Retirement Café

Reports in the news media following the "Tech Crash" and the "Great Recession" were replete with the poignant stories of households who approached retirement over-invested in stocks and found their retirement plans delayed by several years due to market losses. Some wondered aloud if they would ever be able to retire, so you're right to be concerned.

Advice to invest only about half of your savings in stocks for the years approaching and following retirement is probably a fair rule of thumb but a better allocation can be determined by when you will need to spend the money you have invested. It is very likely that a savings portfolio will recover from a bear market in seven to 10 years or less (after retiring, a portfolio from which you are already spending recovers much more slowly).

If there is a portion of your savings that you don't plan to spend during that period, you might choose to leave that money invested in stocks and assume that it will likely recover before you need to spend it. Stocks that you need to spend sooner might not have time to recover from large losses in time.

This means that the more retirement income you have protected from market losses in annuities, Social Security benefits, pensions and the like, the more savings you can leave invested for the long term.

A lower stock allocation before retirement is more important when those non-market resources are limited. My advice would be to reduce your stock holdings to about 50% of your savings this close to retirement. If you want to do a little more math, figure out how much of your savings you probably won't need to spend in the next seven to 10 years and invest that portion in stocks.

    Mitch Fryling, Financial Adviser

Context and expectations are extremely important. After an extended bull market it's always a good opportunity to look back and review your asset allocation and determine if they align with your financial goals. Market risk is one of the biggest retirement risk that retirees face and it's important to understand that market volatility is normal. I often review a little market history with clients and put the recent market history into context. Being only a few years from retirement, it's a great time to sit down and review or create a retirement income plan. The planning process will help you define your goals and help you understand whether you're on track or need to make a few tweaks to get back on track.

While markets this year have acted a bit more "normal" in terms of the ups and downs that we've seen, trying to time the market is a dangerous habit. I instruct my clients to think long-term, thanks to medical advances and healthier lifestyles retirees are living into their 80s and 90s, leading to a 25- to 30-year retirement phase. This is significant, it's important to have a plan and to set good habits to avoid any big emotional mistakes that can derail your retirement. After reviewing your retirement income plan and determining the right course of action you can look for ways to reduce the risk within your investment portfolio.

While things like your goals and risk tolerance will drive the appropriate investment allocations, you will need to consider where best to place those assets and how best to diversify. While most 401(k) plans have started to provide a broader selection of funds to choose from limitation to exist. Cost is important as well as you look across your various investment accounts to determine the best way to implement your retirement strategy. Generally, being close to retirement you will want to increase your bond exposure to reduce the potential big ebbs and flows from the stock market. One way to protect the stock part of your portfolio is to look outside of the domestic markets. Investing globally over the long term has been extremely effective. Historically, a portfolio with an allocation to international stocks has experienced less volatility than a stock portfolio with a total allocation to U.S. stocks only. Other investments can make sense depending on your investment approach.

Looking beyond investments, it's important to consider the various ways to protect the longevity of the portfolio. Another risk that retirees face is what's known as sequence-of-return risk: that's the risk that a market correction could occur early in retirement forcing retirees to spend a larger percentage of their investment portfolio. While this is a major risk, there are ways to protect your investment portfolio. One popular approach is known as a bucketing approach or segmentation approach where you set-up three buckets. The first would be your basic spending needs for the next three to five years and would consist of cash and CD-type investments. The second bucket for years six to 15 and would primarily consist of bonds maturing within the six- to 15-year time frame.

Finally, the third bucket would be your longevity portfolio and would hold your stocks and possibly some bonds. This approach provides some piece of mind that if you experience a market correction early in your retirement that you have cash on hand to meet your basic spending needs while providing the long-term growth that you need to meet your retirement goals. It's important to incorporate other income into your plan such a social security or pension income that you may have coming in to meet your spending needs.

Kerry Uffman, Owner, TWRU Private Wealth Management

Your subscriber's intuition is correct, you don't sit back and expose your wealth to damaging losses before your retirement years begin. But my question for them is this: Is the intuition just to be tactical to avoid damaging losses or more should a pre-retiree be more strategical?

Pre-retirees will be moving from their wealth accumulation years (whereby strategically stressing making decisions to maximize wealth) to the need to strategically re-organize for the next longtime period called the de-cumulating years.

During our working years, strategically we make decisions to maximize our wealth... essentially balancing financial capital wealth according to our return objectives in concert with our personal risk tolerance. So, for many years we focused mainly on the choice of how much to have in "risky assets" vs." safe assets" to drive our wealth towards the goal so to be able to retire as desired.

For pre-retirees, this old choice of "risk-on vs. risk-off," requires re-engineering. The new evolving choice needs to be: Do you want a retirement that is based on hope and probability or choose more a retirement engineered for the much stronger value of expectation?

The pre-retiree's change in strategic choice: The "hope" pursuit is replaced by "expectation engineering." Having engineered expected outcomes has to evolve as the pursued essential strategic value and the new mantra of a pre-retiree.

So, to resolve the question about risk avoidance that the subscriber initially posed, you must re-frame the question by first doing some essential engineering steps.

First, the subscriber should determine how much annual retirement income for spending is required to harvest just from financial capital wealth. I like the idea of a rolling floor of expected income from all source of retirement income at least the first 10 years of retirement.

This claim for a rolling 10 years on financial capital is relieved by the next group of engineered formulations: Isolate income sources from part-time work and solidify plans to harvest annually social capital such as pensions and Social Security.

Muted by part-time work and social capital sources, then you can acknowledge how much financial capital will be expected to be drained annually.

Second, now your first expectation level is revealed. You will know the required annual dedication of financial capital to draw down to meet your expected lifestyle on a year by year basis for a rolling 10 years.

Having the revelation of this annual dedication claim upon financial assets is called "expectational flooring." If the subscriber can re-engineer retirement wealth to meet expectational flooring goals, then the need for a new investment tool chest is brought into play. A tool chest that involves putting assets in the financial capital mix that will fund the expectational flooring requirements. This tool chest is actually the "safe investment" tool chest to construct retirement income that is always stable, sustainable and secure. These three values point to a dedication of the financial capital part of wealth that must be "safe" and "not-risky."

So the tactical choice to avoid market losses, is solved by first the strategic asset dedication of building expectational flooring, not "risk-on and risk-off" tactics. Wealth that is not dedicated to this expectational flooring is by design available to become part of "risky" asset portfolio. The "risky" asset portfolio can follow the subscriber's investment policy used to grow wealth for long-term needs and keep the rolling floor rolling.

I have found by first building an expectational floor via dedicating assets to actually have the 10-year flooring in place, is much better than the hope or probability proposition of the way wealth is invested in the wealth accumulation period of our lives. Don't be surprised that both the traditional investment portfolio based on risk tolerance doesn't remind you of the engineered portfolio based on the build a floor, then expose the upside approach. The risky asset profiles likely could be the same even if arrived in different ways. Nevertheless, I like the idea that expectational engineering can emotionally guide you through market and downs because you will know the asset dedication methods used will secure retirement income at least 10 years out... so you can ride the volatility waves you are now concerned with always a 10-year horizon of expected income.
