NHIC Ilsan sanatorium Turns to IBM to exploit scientific counsel techniques | killexams.com existent Questions and Pass4sure dumps

source: IBM

September 14, 2006 06:00 ET

ARMONK, original york -- (MARKET WIRE) -- September 14, 2006 -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today introduced that NHIC Ilsan sanatorium in Korea is using IBM application to control its original scientific tips equipment.

To establish its superior clinical suggestions equipment, NHIC Ilsan health focus realized it first had to tackle the style it managed its wide set of IT techniques and features. The clinic grew to become to IBM to establish a service-based mostly gadget administration atmosphere that may assist obviate screw ups in IT infrastructure, equivalent to apparatus outages, and respond immediately in the case of network bottlenecks or failures.

The hospital has three core methods: the clinic tips apparatus for registration, fee, treatment, nursing, and common management of patients; the scientific statistics Warehouse, which manages scientific analysis tips; and the image Archiving & communique device for archiving and managing clinical statistics. The health facility essential to effectively manage utter three of these methods, in addition to quite a lot of functions that Run on precise the methods, such as the health facility's Order communique system, net portal and statistics warehouse. They moreover desired to obtain it less difficult for medical institution group of workers to entry scientific statistics via "single sign-on," which reduces the number of IDs and passwords required.

to accomplish this, the clinic worked with IBM to develop a carrier-based mostly IT atmosphere that integrates the management of programs, networks and functions. A lone reporting device enabled the sanatorium to obtain greater effectivity while Tivoli's automatic early-warning system minimized carrier downtime during the immediate detection and notification of IT screw ups.

"The greatest purpose they chosen IBM for this venture changed into on account of their operational awareness and broad IT management portfolio," mentioned SungJik Jung, clinical tips group chief for NHIC Ilsan sanatorium. "With the implementation of this architecture, NHIC Ilsan health facility will continue to strive for efficient management of IT infrastructure to assist advanced medical digitalization."

IBM's portfolio of IT provider administration utility automates one of the vital most challenging techniques associated with managing a intricate IT atmosphere -- equivalent to managing storage devices, addressing IT failures and deploying original utility releases and patches. The utility helps clients fight rising IT expenses and manage constant alternate brought on by using security threats and the require to live aggressive within the market.

"The company improvements brought about through IT provider administration open with the core areas of expertise infrastructure," talked about JaeHong Kim, Tivoli manufacturer supervisor, IBM Korea. "that is what we're doing with NHIC Ilsan health focus -- helping them exchange the manner they control their IT processes so as to greater efficiently office their core medical counsel systems."

The IBM items used for this venture encompass IBM Tivoli Monitoring for failure and efficiency management of hardware, database and middleware; IBM Tivoli commercial enterprise Console; IBM Tivoli Netview for network administration; IBM Tivoli business apparatus manager; and IBM TotalStorage productiveness focus for failure administration of storage items. IBM And The Third generation of Multi-Cloud | killexams.com existent Questions and Pass4sure dumps

[Note: as a Forbes contributor, I outcome not believe any commercial relationship with IBM or its staff.]

First, what is significant in regards to the new bulletins?

At its believe 2019 convention, IBM introduced Watson anyplace, the latest evolution of its fabled  AI platform (originally limited to the IBM Cloud), that allows you to now Run throughout enterprise records centers and most principal public clouds together with AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. My analyzing is that this is a potential signal of issues to approach with purple Hat: IBM seems to breathe coming to terms with its relative weakness as an IaaS participant, and its big strengths as a platform and managed carrier provider. building the multi-cloud muscle with Watson now, will serve IBM smartly when it involves pink Hat OpenShift in a while. IBM moreover made a sequence of bulletins relating to its hybrid cloud  offerings, including a new Cloud Integration Platform connecting purposes from different companies and across sever substrates right into a lone evolution environment; and original end-to-end hybrid cloud capabilities, bringing IBM into the managed-multi-cloud space. once again, to me this looks like infrastructure-building for the day IBM activates the multi-cloud 'power button', the exhaust of its present and original expertise and ambitious channel belongings.

How the crimson Hat deal could exchange IBM

Jim is of the selfsame view they haven’t seen an IT wave stream as greatly and as at once as containers believe in a long time—no longer even cloud, which took the better partake of a decade to purchase off. This isn’t just due to Solomon Hykes’s eye-opening original Docker demo in 2013, or to the CNCF’s stellar neighborhood- and ecosystem-building efforts—the reasons are certainly technological and strategic. Amongst their many merits, containers truly present the edge to decouple the underlying expertise from the utility layer. In a key perception, Jim recommended that whereas multi-cloud used to mean private+public, after which evolved into a term for 'select & select' approach (as an instance, Google Cloud Engine for compute, with Amazon RDS for a database), containers and connected orchestration techniques are leading us to a greater effective definition. Multi-cloud now is ready 'construct as soon as, ship many', on fully absorbed infrastructure. As I wrote in a outdated publish, 'smooth-PaaS' is on the surge for a lot of connected causes, however the added perception prerogative here is ready a fuller realization of the multi-cloud vision. during this original stage of the market, the problem shifts to areas reminiscent of managing information sources and making multi-cloud operations less demanding. in this sense, OpenShift as PaaS, along side IBM's functions capabilities, become probably powerful strategic property.

How IBM sees its role during this cloud-native world

Jim being from the capabilities facet, his view on this became not a hardware model for a utility-defined world; he claimed that IBM has always helped corporations contend with massive exchange, and that nonetheless is the leading mission. The market, in case you reckon press releases, is constantly touching like a Newton's cradle from public cloud to inner most cloud and lower back once again. in my view, anytime I hear of a huge enterprise going ‘all-in’ on either side, I are inclined to snigger: as I lined in a outdated submit, oversimplifying architecture and infrastructure has ended many an IT profession. tolerate in reason that leading UK word outlet that declared it is going ‘all-in with AWS’ because it couldn’t recognise its ambitions on DIY-OpenStack? i was in the scope when the previous CIO refused vendor aid in imposing this intricate deepest cloud platform and—shock—the scan failed.

Jim counseled that in his adventure, providers can assist consumers focus on the business’s required enterprise goals, the usage of 5 areas for analysis and planning, as IBM already does:

  • Infrastructure structure
  • application structure
  • DevOps and automation
  • evolved operational models
  • advanced security fashions
  • sure, the brand original tech is vivid, but much more faultfinding for purchasers are things like managing legacy-IT resistance, re-skilling an older staff, and managing generational gaps (cloud endemic devs canbe much younger than their Ops counterparts). In a magnificent statistic, Jim claimed that 50% of IBMers had been below 5 years with the company, and that the enterprise has confident millenial-hiring courses.

IBM's open source region gets a lift

an principal learning of the acquisition that has not got enough attention, personally, is that in buying pink Hat, IBM has shot into the suitable-three groups measured by course of open supply utility contributions. In a celebrity-studded panel throughout the feel convention, IBM looks to believe embraced this region gladly. Analyst enterprise RedMonk's co-founder Steve O’Grady correctly warned that, “the long Run success of open source is neither confident nor inevitable.” comparable to some point I covered in a traditional post, O'Grady outlined profiteering, licensing and company models as systemic challenges that ought to breathe addressed.

despite the fact, even though open supply continues to thrive, it's a predominantly backside-up IT phenomenon, which me breathe at odds with IBM's more ordinary CIO-downwards approach. To me here is probably the most pleasing areas to observe: as pink Hat gets integrated into the family, will IBM breathe a hit in altering its own course of life, taking full expertise of its history (as an example, its skill-hothouse lab the Linux technology center), its original and present applied sciences (Kubernetes-primarily based choices, free Linux OSs) and its newfound open source dominance?

IBM’s utility Guru is looking it Quits | killexams.com existent Questions and Pass4sure dumps

Steve Mills, the IBM veteran who transformed that business’s utility strategy, is retiring.

The information is rarely a surprise. Mills, joined huge Blue clean out of Union school in 1973, in keeping with his legitimate bio and is as a consequence, after 43 years with the company, closing in on retirement age.

A year in the past, Mills became promoted to govt vice president for IBM application and systems, reporting at once to IBM chief govt Ginni Rometty, whom he advised on utility and hardware considerations. but for years up until that point, he had helped shape what grew to become the IBM (ibm) utility community.

Going again to 1995, when IBM formed its utility neighborhood, Mills performed a key position, at the start aiding then senior vp John M. Thompson. In 2000, he himself become named senior vp of that group.

a broad chunk of Mills’ job there was corralling many dozens of product and analysis groups that every one had their own concepts about what technologies to obtain exhaust of.

WATCH: IBM CEO on most disruptive know-how.

“That became no longer effortless because he inherited fiefdoms both in products and in research every of which had its personal language, its own middleware, its own database of choice. He needed to fight that fight of getting them on the identical page,” said long-time IBM watcher Judith Hurwitz, founder and chief government of Hurwitz & buddies, a Needham, Mass.-based mostly IT consulting company.

“Steve set a mandate: ‘No, you gained’t exhaust that database in your product, you’ll exhaust DB2.’ He needed to combat that fight and americans fought him again enamel and nail and he received,” Hurwitz observed. DB2 is IBM’s own database that competes with Microsoft (msft) SQL Server and Oracle’s (orcl) database.

Mills, she added, changed into additionally able to look to breathe at the strengths and weaknesses of utter IBM technologies and determine gaps the region an acquisition may assist.

    extra: On IBM utility.

in this quest, Mills helped IBM shuffle its utility business from a bewildering array of hundreds products into 4 basic brands—Lotus for communications and collaboration; WebSphere for middleware or the application glue that ties collectively different layers of know-how; DB2 the aforementioned database, and Tivoli methods management utility. The Rational application tools acquisition took region later so as to add a fifth company.

Mills additionally helped e-book IBM’s $four.9 billion acquisition of Cognos in 2007 that it used to parlay a shift from being a database company per se into providing what it started calling “company intelligence.” it's a much better-cost (ie. more ecocnomic) category as database earnings became more and more commoditized.

throughout Mills’ tenure, IBM acquired greater than 30 software corporations. Ingesting utter those piece-elements and making sense of them in a lone company context became not for the faint of heart. The internet influence is there’s silent an terrible lot to breathe perplexed about, however the overall lineup makes extra flavor now than it did 20 years in the past.

A former IBM insider moreover credited Mills with pushing the enterprise to embody Linux, the open-source operating device that now runs on everything from cell contraptions to IBM mainframes.

Suffice it to assert it became no longer effortless to influence IBM to lower back what changed into basically a free operating gadget for hardware that it bought for hundreds of thousands of dollars at a pop. but it surely did so, and analysts now credit score using Linux as helping to retain mainframes central.

but critics would breathe awake that IBM let Amazon (amzn)internet services purchase an uncontested lead in cloud computing birth in 2006. IBM’s early efforts in cloud were roundly brushed aside, and had been the understanding IBM became compelled to buy SoftLayer, the cloud and hosting company IBM purchased three years in the past for $2 billion.

IBM skeptics’ chief grievance is that the business has been extra concentrated on economic engineering for the previous decade through prioritizing inventory buybacks and advertising unrealistic earnings projections in preference to constructing brilliant products. And Mills, who headed the application neighborhood for so long, bears some responsibility for that although most criticism has been directed at former IBM chief govt Sam Palmisano.

In 2010, Palmisano sought to raise shareholder self credit by promising that IBM would obtain $20 annual salary per partake by means of 2015, a goal that no one outdoor of Armonk, N.Y., believed to breathe credible.

    nonetheless, Mills could breathe ignored.

Lance Crosby, co-founder and former chief govt of SoftLayer, pointed out working with Mills become an training.

“In my two-year stint at IBM, I had the privilege to drudgery directly with Steve and breathe taught from one of the crucial all-time foremost,” Crosby wrote on his facebook web page.

“From his photographic recollection to unstoppable drudgery ethic to his palms-on client trend—Steve left every thing he had on the province every lone day. I’ve met only a few individuals who recede a hundred and ten% perpetually and Steve turned into a kindly of.”

Who is awake of? Crosby, who remaining yr launched a original safety startup called StackPath, may moreover approach to breathe bringing Mills aboard over there.

Case Study: A More Resilient Application Infrastructure

Company taps on-demand delivery model to enhance retail management application

  • By Stephen Swoyer
  • 05/17/2005
  • Jeff Almoney knows a thing or two about scalable, highly available computing technologies. During a stint as director of advanced information technology with the Pennsylvania situation University, he oversaw the implementation of one of the first IBM Corp. RS/6000 SP2 clusters—a system with serial number 3. Serial numbers 1 and 2, he says, were deployed at “Cornell University and some lab, somewhere.” To this day, Almoney remains on a first-name basis with Irving Wladawsky-Berger, vice-president of technology strategy for IBM, and the visionary behind SP2 and other technologies.

These days, Almoney is CTO of Reynolds & Reynolds Co., a provider of customer service and training solutions for several industries, including almost 40 percent of North American automotive retailers. Reynolds typically provides clients with some of the hardware, software, and services they requisite to uphold their everyday business operations. Reynolds has been supercilious of its aptitude to deliver scalable and trustworthy applications and services to more than 20,000 customers.

    Scalability Shortcomings

The rub, Almoney says, was that his employer’s Intel-based server infrastructure had long ceased to breathe either scalable or reliable. There was a excellent understanding for this: Reynolds’ “infrastructure” wasn’t entirely in-house; it included an “extra-structure” of systems scattered across customer sites.

At first, Reynolds tried to mitigate this situation by transitioning to an ASP-type service model and centralizing on rack-mounted servers, but the approach led to additional problems. Reynolds’ ASP server farm didn’t scale well and was inherently difficult to manage. Just as important, even with the ASP model, the company’s customers silent had to assume some of the management burden.

The issue, as Almoney dryly notes, was that few automotive dealers exist solely to manage their IT systems; but with vanilla Intel-based servers, some dealers had become part-time IT administrators by default.

What Reynolds needed, Almoney determined, was an adaptive infrastructure that was at once more resilient and more reliable. At a minimum, he figured, Reynolds would requisite to centralize the management and administration of its applications and services to the greatest degree possible. This meant offloading as much of the day-to-day hosting and administration of customers’ systems and applications as was possible. In other words, Reynolds needed a pipedream.

“What they were looking for was a course to upgrade the systems that the dealers had access to, but, ideally, they would moreover breathe able to shift the cross of managing these [systems] back to us, too,” he says. “But just as principal was the scalability and reliability of the platform, and moreover the manageability—ideally, they were looking for autonomic capabilities, especially self-healing.”

    Answer to a Pipedream

The reply to Almoney’s prayers came in a miniature configuration factor: a blade server. Reynolds & Reynolds tapped a next-generation infrastructure based on IBM’s BladeCenter technology, IBM Director blade management system, IBM’s Tivoli management offerings, and IBM TotalStorage arrays.

Reynolds’ blade systems Run a blend of Linux and Windows systems and are the culmination of a massive consolidation of the company’s former (highly distributed) server infrastructure.

In addition, the company decided to build an entirely original retail management application, based on an on-demand delivery model, that taps some of the autonomic and self-management capabilities provided by IBM’s Director BladeCenter management software and Tivoli management products.

One result, says, Almoney, is increased resiliency: If a system or component fails, BladeCenter automatically detects the failure and issues a notification without requiring human intervention. On top of that, BladeCenter—and, more specifically, IBM Tivoli management—helps to automate Reynolds’ backup and catastrophe recovery operations. This is a boon to customers, to articulate the least, says Almoney, because it helps to minimize the extent to which they’re forced to wear the IT manager’s hat.

“The beauty of the BladeCenter implementation is the complete remote control of the system. They believe a completely remote control [environment]. There’s no physical attendance of their system. There are people available to outcome remote hand’s-on support, but the only understanding there are hands in the system is to outcome repairs.”

It’s for this reason, says Almoney, that the BladeCenter paradigm is so very compelling. “So I reflect you can anticipate to obtain your life easier because you’ve got an infrastructure that has complete remote control, so the next piece is making confident you build it in a scalable way, so making confident you believe a storage infrastructure that can uphold it.”

    Icing on the Cake

There are other benefits, too. Increased resiliency translates, to some extent, into improved predictability. Improved predictability, Almoney says, correlates with better customer service. “You want your systems to breathe as trustworthy as possible. They certainly in their On require environment will give you an SLA, and because of that they want to give you a existent enterprise-class delivery of service.”

BladeCenter is a highly centralized offering, Almoney notes, and to a big extent benefits from technology trickle-down from the ease of IBM’s stack. In this respect, he says, it reminds him of the best of what the erstwhile RS/6000 SP2 systems had to present (in terms of scalability and integrated manageability) with autonomic and improved self-management capabilities thrown in to boot.

“The RS/6000 SP was about having lots of processors that can drudgery on the selfsame problem, so it had the aptitude to outcome message-passing and parallel processing. Not that you can’t outcome the selfsame thing on the BladeCenter. In fact, the latest BladeCenters believe InfiniBand,” he concludes.

So how does Reynolds & Reynolds original BladeCenter implementation measure up in the most principal of metrics—ROI?

Almoney says it’s difficult to affix a expense to what amounts to a wholesale transformation of its existing infrastructure. “For us, it’s difficult to just tow that piece out. They really Run a better, higher-class system, and more expensive hardware is used in the centralized environment than they would ship to individual dealers,” he concludes.

“The ROI is a bit scabrous of a calculation. It’s difficult to rescue a expense on the absolutely much better plane of service they can present customers [and] the course we’ve really reduced customer headaches.”

Reaching out from its initial base of high-end, bleeding-edge implementations, Fibre Channel technology is now touching into mainstream business applications. The path to this broader market penetration is through storage locality networks (SANs). No longer a build-it-yourself technology, SANs now present companies of utter sizes and budgets an opportunity to implement cost-effective, scalable storage.

Storage administrators can now comparison shop among a host of low-cost Fibre Channel SAN solutions, complete with disk arrays, hubs, switches, host bus adapters (HBAs), and increasingly powerful management software-all pre-integrated and pre-tested.

As require for storage capacity continues to grow exponentially, more and more companies are finding that the host-attached storage implementations that served them well in the past are now bringing them to the brink of disaster.

Meanwhile, as Windows NT/2000 gains ground in the low-end to mid-range server markets, Fibre Channel SAN storage is proving to breathe a frequent companion. The two trends are in fact related, because host-attached storage is particularly cumbersome in NT environments where application requirements quickly outgrow local storage capacity. The extensive legroom of a Fibre Channel SAN makes this a relative non-issue.

    Mazda test drives a SAN

In keen contrast to the situation just a year ago, more and more IT organizations no longer discern Fibre Channel as a frill item, but a practical, relatively risk-free investment path to meet long-term storage needs. For example, Mazda Corporation, in Irvine, CA, is using a Fibre Channel SAN for the tape backup operations of its corporate servers.

Kai Sookwongse, Mazda's systems manager for LAN support, notes that "in terms of overall cost-effectiveness, Fibre Channel is a pretty pricey solution just for backup." In fact, Sookwongse says that given the flavor and learning they believe today, they probably wouldn't implement Fibre Channel just for backup. However, he notes that "when you recognize at disk storage down the road, as they are, it's much more justifiable. And Fibre Channel prices are constantly dropping."

Bayer Corp.'s storage locality network is set up as a linked pair of FC-AL loops, with six servers in each loop.

Provided by Cranel Inc., a systems integrator in Columbus, OH, Mazda's SAN currently consists of eight servers connected via a Gadzoox Capellix 3000 Fibre Channel switch to a StorageTek Timber

Wolf 9714 tape library capable of up to 3.5TB of DLT tape storage. Originally, Mazda had attempted to implement its SAN using a Fibre Channel hub, but soon institute that approach to breathe inadequate. "If any one device on the hub was shut down, the entire network had to breathe restarted," recalls designate Williams, a LAN engineer at Mazda. "Since touching to the switch, however, utter of the issues they had relative to Fibre Channel believe gone away."

So far, the company has hooked up only its high-availability servers to the SAN, a amalgamate of one/two/four-processor ProLiants running Windows NT. utter of the servers are connected to the Gadzoox switch via Emulex HBAs.

Mazda is in the process of migrating from Token Ring to a Gigabit Ethernet LAN. Servers that are not on the Fibre Channel network are connected to backup storage via the Gigabit Ethernet LAN. "We've created a totally isolated backup network, with the lighter-usage servers backed up over Gigabit Ethernet and the high-availability systems over Fibre Channel," says Sookwongse. "As the migration continues, they may add Fibre Channel cards to some of the other servers as well."

Mazda is using Veritas NetBackup 3.2 software, which includes a shared-storage option that makes backups materialize to breathe local by allowing clients to map the 9714 drives to local servers. Williams says the Veritas tools are particularly useful for centralized backup and management.

Mazda has 10 regional offices throughout the US and Canada, each with an HP 718 autoloader and secondary backup server linked to the primary corporate backup server. "Our primary server is managing utter of their corporate servers, as well as utter the regional offices. If they want to initiate a backup or restore, they can outcome it from one console, anywhere in the enterprise," Williams explains.

Williams says their backup operations believe benefited significantly from the Fibre Channel SAN implementation: "We're simultaneously initiating backups of about 60 servers, and utter that traffic can breathe overwhelming to the primary network. Offloading backup processing from the LAN onto Fibre Channel frees up the server network and helps mitigate the bottleneck." Compared to their 16Mbps Token Ring, Williams says their backup times believe gone from 13 hours to 3 hours.

Although Mazda is currently using its Fibre Channel SAN exclusively for backup, with utter of its on-line storage silent handled by local SCSI drives and arrays, Williams says they will open testing the feasibility of switching to a central Fibre Channel-based storage array this year.

    SAN alleviates headaches

Bayer Corporation has moreover nick costs by shifting from host-attached to shared Fibre Channel SAN storage. Bayer's business operations comprehend a number of big Oracle databases running on RS/6000 servers. Prior to implementing the SAN, each of these servers was backed up to its own dedicated tape drive. Now the company is able to backup utter its databases to two StorageTek 9740 tape libraries, each housing eight 9840 tape drives. Currently, six servers partake this pool of storage via two STK StorageNet access hubs, each of which can uphold up to 32 FC-AL connections.

The Bayer storage network is set up as a linked pair of FC-AL loops with eight drives and six servers in each loop. Each server has connections to both hubs via Cambex HBAs. As explained by Tom Mours, Bayer's senior systems analyst, because the company has a amalgamate of Microchannel and PCI-based RS/6000 machines, two different types of HBAs are required. "At the time of their implementation, Cambex was the only vendor that could provide both interfaces," Mours explains.

To manage its servers and storage resources, Bayer implements IBM/Tivoli Systems' Adstar Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM) software. Gresham Software helped with this implementation, together with StorageTek. Gresham's Enterprise DistribuTAPE product works with StorageTek's Automated Cartridge System Library Software (ACSLS) to allow multiple ADSM servers to partake tape drives and a lone tape library.

Although the current configuration of Bayer's SAN has allowed them to efficiently partake storage on common resources, Mours says they will reckon a switched fabric topology in their next upgrade. "We've realized considerable cost savings from their SAN implementation, but when they first implemented it, switched networks weren't really available. They outcome silent Run into a few network rebooting problems that a switched network would solve."

In general, Mours advises original SAN implementers to breathe confident to secure the latest code from vendors. "Because IBM didn't originally believe the necessary HBAs, they had to recede to a third party whose microcode wasn't the most stable initially."

Although Mours says these glitches believe been worked out, he is nevertheless concerned about the original server he will breathe adding to his SAN later this year, which will incorporate IBM's original Fibre Channel HBA. "We'll breathe crossing their fingers that it will work. We've asked the vendors about testing in advance, but each points the finger to the other guy."

    Service providers leverage SANs

Many companies aren't interested in making any more of an investment in storage technology than they absolutely believe to. However, that doesn't connote that they don't recognize the faultfinding consequence of instantaneous, trustworthy access to-and protection of-their information resources. They simply prefer to procure these capabilities as services rather than products.

In fact, a growing number of companies are now positioning themselves to meet the needs of these firms, many of whom are in gyrate finding Fibre Channel SANs to breathe the most flexible, cost-effective approach to meeting both rapid growth and diverse customer requirements.

InterLan Technologies Inc. provides application hosting and Internet connectivity services to miniature to mid-size companies. Those companies "recognize that they requisite a Web presence, but either they aren't technology-savvy or they don't want to deal with investing in a data focus and technical staff," explains designate Nilsson, InterLan's chief technology officer.

Mark Nilsson - Chief technology officer, InterLan

InterLan provides this capability for them, including data center, servers, storage, backup, technical support, connectivity, and application development. Nilsson says 70% to 80% of InterLan's revenue base is currently customers looking for Web hosting and application management, as opposed to sheer connectivity. Starting out in a 500-sq.-ft. facility, InterLan's data focus now occupies more than 30,000 square feet.

InterLan began operations with Sun StorEdge A1000/D1000 12-disk RAID arrays. However, it quickly became limpid that this solution would not breathe practical for the big amount of database storage they were bringing online. Says Nilsson, "We institute a lot of companies were looking for relatively miniature amounts of RAID storage (100GB or less), and these miniature arrays took up a lot of shelf space and moreover used different management systems."

Another problem associated with database storage requirements is the distribution and segregation of arrays, with some disks used for caching, some for volumes, some for data. "This really used up a lot of disks quickly, and you could remain up using an entire array for a 9GB database," says Terry Rowbotham, InterLan's vice president of engineering. "Then, each time a customer's needs grew, it would breathe necessary to shut down the system to add capacity."

Nilsson says they soon recognized they would requisite to shuffle to on-demand storage. "We wanted to not only meet their customers' current storage needs, but moreover provide the capacity to extend their storage on require without having to bring their pipe down or swap hardware."

InterLan's Fibre Channel SAN consists of seven MTI Vivant V20 Fibre Channel storage arrays, servicing both Sun Unix and HP Windows NT servers. Each Vivant V20 array is configured with thirty-six 36GB Seagate Cheetah Fibre Channel drives, for a total of 1.3TB per unit. MTI certifies utter of its SAN components, including HBAs. HP HBAs are used in the HP servers, while the Sun servers exhaust Emulex HBAs for PCI connections and JNI HBAs for S-bus connections.

Currently, InterLan has both lone and dual-hosting capability over a 25-port switched fabric. Rowbotham says they will add more switching capability as capacity requirements increase. MTI ships V20 arrays with 8-port and 16-port Ancor Communications switches, but each of InterLan's V20s currently has two 16-port switches for a total of 196 switched connections. "Hopefully, Fibre Channel will breathe going to 32-port and 64-port switches in the very near future," says Rowbotham. [Editor's note: Ancor and Inrange Technologies terminal month began shipping 64-port Fibre Channel switches.]

Rowbotham strongly recommends that SAN implementers remain with open-system designs. "There isn't any criterion for SANs yet, and until one develops, you requisite to breathe confident that your vendors will comply with standards when they outcome approach out, and not lock you into a proprietary environment."

Although InterLan hasn't yet benchmarked transfer rates, Rowbotham says they haven't experienced any bottlenecks. "The majority of their customers believe big databases that are extremely read/write intensive, and they specifically went with Fibre Channel because of its performance and expandability."

Another primary requirement for Inter-Lan's storage solution was to believe LUN mapping (or masking) technology within the storage arrays to isolate each customer's assigned storage. MTI's Data Shield volume-mapping firmware provides this capability by mapping the worldwide appellation of each server's HBA directly to its assigned storage.

Data Shield has moreover helped minimize any problems from multiple operating systems on the selfsame SAN. Says Rowbotham, "NT will try to purchase as much of the disk space as possible, but by isolating the LUNs they can manage it."

    SAN bridges stranded storage islands

Electric Lightwave is another service company offering Fibre Channel-based SAN technology to a second tier of storage users. The company provides local-exchange telecommunications services to corporate users in a nine-state region in the Western US. Focusing on providing Internet backbone resources to application service providers (ASPs), Electric Lightwave currently has a amalgamate of 47 local servers, as well as a number of remote systems.

According to Wayne Hall, Electric Lightwave's director of IT, the company decided to shuffle to a SAN about a year ago to deal with the problem of "stranded storage." At the time, Electric Lightwave had only two servers with fiber connectivity, both connected to an EMC Symmetrix 3700. The ease of its servers were using direct-attached HP AutoRAID storage arrays. As eminent by Hall, "Although fully configured they could secure proximate to 500GB per array, only one server could exhaust it. In other words, it was stranded storage and they needed to fix that problem."

Electric Lightwave's SAN now accesses almost 4TB of data on multiple re-sources, including 1TB on the Symmetrix 3700, a total of 1.8TB of shared storage on 13 HP AutoRAID arrays, and an additional 1TB of storage on a original HP XP256 disk array.

All of the storage is networked over a fabric of four Brocade SilkWorm 2800 switches, and managed using HP's SAN Manager software. The first servers to recede on the SAN were a amalgamate of Sun Enterprise systems and HP 9000 servers. utter of the servers exhaust HP/Agilent HBAs, which are based on Agilent's Tachyon chip.

Hall says they've experienced no interoperability problems between the EMC and HP storage arrays. The transition from host-attached to SAN storage involved multiple transfers between devices. The first step was to mirror utter of the data from the HP AutoRAID arrays onto the Symmetrix 3700, while production continued on the HP XP256 array. "We then severed the link to the RAID arrays, rolled over to the SAN, and then reconnected the RAID arrays to the SAN." Hall says the transition went fairly smoothly, with the additional capitalize of a quicken extend of 10% to 20% with the SAN vs. direct-attached SCSI storage.

Having completed the initial phase of its implementation, Electric Lightwave plans to add additional servers to its SAN. Next month, the company will shuffle two VAX servers to the network, followed by 27 NetWare servers, utter of which currently believe direct-attached storage. After that, Hall says they'll recognize at bringing their NT platforms onto the SAN. As with other NT users, Hall says he's silent "concerned about NT's inclination to find any empty storage and grab it," but believes this is being worked on.

Down the road, Electric Lightwave moreover plans to add its remote servers to the SAN. "Right now, however," says Hall, "we're doing emulated private loop [EPL] and they don't want to outcome EPL over a very big WAN. We'll wait until they secure the full fabric login capability in the operating system."

In general, Hall recommends that utter original SAN implementers start out with a homogeneous server environment. "In six months or so, this may not breathe necessary, but the software and the protocols haven't been standardized yet."

    SAN 101

Ohio situation University's Fisher College of business offers undergraduate through doctoral degree programs to more than 4,500 students. To uphold these programs, the school has implemented a Fibre Channel SAN that, in addition to supporting its NetWare database and user directories, moreover hosts storage for its Web applications and e-mail servers. Currently, this accounts for 500GB of storage, having grown more than 150% in less than a year.

One of the animated things about Fisher College's SAN, however, is that it was delivered as a lone integrated package. XIOtech's Magnitude Fibre Channel SAN array comes with a 32-drive array, RAID controller, eight-port Fibre Channel switch, and analytic volume management software. Magnitude supports both point-to-point and FC-AL topologies, with up to eight Windows NT or NetWare server connections in a point-to-point configuration. (Seagate Technology recently acquired XIOtech.)

The Fisher College SAN is configured with point-to-point connections to four Dell PowerEdge 4200/4300 NetWare servers and an FC-AL connection to an external Vixel Rapport 2006 six-port FC-AL hub, which links two additional Sun Enterprise 250 e-mail and Web servers. XIOtech's REDI Zone software limits each individual server's access to specific data volumes.

According to Brian Wilson, a network engineer/developer at Fisher College, they first began thinking about implementing a SAN in mid-1998, and spent the following 8 to 10 months researching the possibilities.

One alternative was the exhaust of network-attached storage (NAS) on their existing Gigabit Ethernet LAN backbone. "What they found, however," says Wilson, "is that regardless of the number of ports being served, the bottleneck would always breathe that one connection to the network. Instead, with Fibre Channel, they secure fiber quicken to each individual server, with no bottlenecks."

The Magnitude system was moreover able to exploit the school's multiple operating system environments, including NetWare, Windows NT, Solaris, and IRIX.

Working with XIOtech personnel, Wilson says their initial installation went extremely smoothly, with the network up and running within a matter of hours. "It was much like adding a original controller card to their system, and they began adding storage to their network later that day," says Wilson.

Based on his experience, Wilson recommends that utter potential SAN users define a very limpid set of goals before they start looking for solutions, and that they then "look at as many vendors offerings as they can for the consummate match. Don't settle for anything less."

    Shared identities

Federated approach makes identity management portable

  • By Maggie Biggs
  • Mar 13, 2008
  • Overlapping identity management systems can breathe as much of a twinge to users ' and ultimately to systems administrators ' as multiple passwords.

Agencies that maintain multiple user repositories or whose processes cross more than one security domain should reckon implementing federated identity management to reduce administrative overhead and costs while increasing security and simplifying the user's experience. The primary objective of federated identity management is to give authorized users the aptitude to securely access applications or services both in their own organization and in other domains without the requisite for redundant user administration in utter the domains involved.

The requisite is obvious; with the increased integration of Internet-related technologies into business processes, users often requisite to cross domains to access external systems. Likewise, external users often requisite to access internal systems.

Imagine federal, situation and local first responders being able to access utter levels of resources with a lone sign-on. A federated identity management system can exploit that nature of responsibility without sacrificing security.

    Maintaining identities

There are several benefits to implementing federated identity management. 'Chief among those that believe driven deployments is the cost of maintaining identities for service providers," said Andras Cser of Forrester research. 'With federation, only one party needs to maintain the users' identities.'

Moreover, security can breathe improved by authenticating and authorizing users in a lone operation and then using their identity attributes to determine which applications or services they can access.

Privacy can moreover breathe addressed because the information shared can breathe controlled or limited.

For the user, life gets easier because in a federated environment, they must recall only a lone password.

Adoption of federated identity management is expected to extend dramatically this year and next as organizations attempt to improve communication with business partners, enhance customer service, better integrate outsourced services, and adopt more open, standards- based technologies. Cser said he expects market adoption to double by 2009.

However, some challenges remain before adoption can recede mainstream ' and they're not only technical. People, process and risk issues must breathe addressed during any federated identity implementation, said Gregg Kreizman, research director of Secure business Enablement at Gartner Group. These agreements lay out the fundamental expectations for utter parties and comprehend elements such as:

  • How identity will breathe proved before a credential is issued.
  • What forms of authentication will breathe used.
  • The expectations for provisioning and de-provisioning users.
  • How credential providers' activities will breathe monitored and audited.
  • Which service levels will breathe maintained.
  • What are the users' responsibilities.
  • The liabilities for each party in the event of a breech or failure.
  • The audit requirements.
  • 'Establishing such an agreement has typically been the most difficult partake of establishing a federation,' Kreizman said. Therefore, one of the most principal items on your federated identity management checklist should breathe establishing a formal governance contrivance with utter cross-domain partners.

Carolyn Ford, product manager for Identity and Access Management Solutions at Novell, said she moreover sees some technical hurdles. 'There needs to breathe standardization on identity policies and procedures to ensure consistency through the organization,' she said. 'Organizations moreover requisite to implement an external auditing and monitoring system to validate and prove those systems were properly implemented and effective.'

    How it works

At a high level, a user or service logs in to an identity provider (IdP) ' usually in the user's local domain. The user or service then requests access to an application or a service. If that request is in the local domain and the user is authorized to access it, the IdP grants access.

On the other hand, if the request is for an application or service in another domain, the IdP redirects the request along with an assertion containing the federated identity information.
