    Regardless of the tools selected, Smith recommends piloting the technology at a handful of selected sites. "Document the lessons you learn and employ that [information] to write the MOPs (methods of procedures) needed for site cutovers once plenary deployment begins." He notes that potential adopters also exigency to understand how the technology scales. "The pilot may hasten great, but when you scale up to the number of planned sites you may hit unforeseen issues if you haven’t planned for them," Smith says.

    SD-WAN implies the employ of a controller to manage connections between a company’s branch offices, states Andrei Lipnitski, an information communication and technology department manager at software development company ScienceSoft. "To pushover to SD-WAN, the company needs one controller installed in the head office, with a system administrator to manage it, and to configure SD-WAN routers, which supersede outdated hardware used in branch offices," he says.

    SD-WAN architectures that support passthrough network setups allow the existing network setup to exist left unchanged. "Once that install is complete, the network should duty identical as before," notes Jay Hakin, CEO of Mushroom Networks, an SD-WAN vendor.     Intent-based networking (IBN) technology advances SDN an additional step.     IBN allows administrators to set specific network policies and then depend on automation to ensure that those policies are implemented. "There's a lot of hype and misinformation around IBN," Smith says. "There's quiet some debate about what it actually can and can’t result ... so customers exigency to really investigate and expend time understanding what’s real and what’s theoretical," he cautions.

    Adopting IBN without risking disruption requires a worthy deal of long-suffering and practice, observes Tim Parker, vice president of network strategy at data hub and colocation provider Flexential. "The more difficult piece that almost outweighs the benefits is lamentable to ACI (application centric infrastructure) or fresh operating systems that support [IBN]," he explains. "For example, they automated their DDOS scrubbing based on NetFlow data from Kentik ... and Python scripts that react when a trigger or threshold is reached," he notes. "But it's far from [reaching] the precise AI of making smart decisions based on learning the impacts of the eventual decision."

    Andrew Wertkin, CTO of BlueCat a network technology firm, believes that IBN is far more than a technology transformation. "It also affects organization skill-sets, operations, compliance/governance and existing service flat agreements." He recommends that organizations assess their readiness in sum of these areas. "Don’t bag over your skis," Wertkin advises. "Start small and focused."

    Look before leaping to NFV

    Network functions virtualization (NFV) abstracts network functions, allowing them to exist installed, controlled and manipulated by software running on standardized compute nodes. "NFV and SDN free networks from their dependence on underlying physical hardware," says Bill Long, vice president of interconnection services at data hub and colocation provider Equinix. Instead, network orchestration and control are managed through software, without specialized tackle confined to a specific location. "Companies can safely connect their networks to applications and cloud services wherever they are and compute resources can exist turned up or down as needed," Long explains. "This greatly increases scalability and simplicity."

    Troubles can arise when enterprises fail to fully contemplate through their exigency for NFV. "A lot of companies are jumping into NFV without first justifying a traffic case," Smith says. "For example, if the traffic needs more flexibility at its branch locations, then using NFV to spin up fresh network services is a worthy idea."

    Adoption disruptions can exist minimized by ensuring pellucid communication between IT teams. "NFV decouples network functions from the underlying server hardware, which enables greater flexibility and elasticity," says Ashish Shah a vice president at Avi Networks, a data hub and clouds application platform provider. "However, since the server team is amenable for maintaining and patching x86 servers, pellucid understanding and communications between the server and networking teams will exist important."

    Centralized policy and lifecycle management of virtual network duty is another vital consideration for long term success. Managing each instance of an NFV will exist cumbersome and can obviate the benefits of the transition to NFV, Shah warns.

    Migrating existing applications will require additional suffuse to ensure that sum application dependencies, scripts and policies are accounted for. "Taking steps to document these dependencies can reduce disruptions," Shah says.

    In the bigger picture, "whether focusing on SDN, SD-WAN, IBN or NFV, it’s vital to recall that with each fresh technology comes fresh tools, training, support and more," Smith says. "Ensuring your teams believe the proper tools and training is critical to successful deployments and minimal disruption."

    Cisco is assisting Bharti Airtel to build India’s largest 5G-ready, IP-based automated network. Airtel aims to deliver enhanced subscriber experiences and offer high-speed mobile access for its smartphone customers.

    Cisco is assisting SoftBank for the world’s first Segment Routing IPv6 (SRv6) deployment in Japan helping to reduce Capex and Opex.

    Deploying SRv6 in a 5G mobile network simplifies network layers and integrates user plane functions from end-to-end with only IPv6 protocol, making things simple, controllable, and flexible.

    “Converging 5G features into the end-to-end IPv6 layer with Segment Routing capabilities, is the key to embodying 5G in a simple, scalable architecture,” said Junichi Miyakawa, CTO for SoftBank.


    Cisco is assisting KT for the launch of an automated 5G mobile network platform. Cisco is transitioning KT’s network architecture to better manage 5G traffic with advanced routing and automation software, intellectual analytics and machine learning.

    The network includes a 5G routing backbone with Cisco Network Convergence System Router 6000 and ACI on Nexus 9000 switching platform at KT’s distributed data centers in Korea.

    “KT is aligned with innovative technology partners enjoy Cisco that can design and launch commercial 5G services focused on ultra-low latency as the world’s first CUPS architecture use,” said Su-Kil Lee, senior vice president of Network Research Technology support Unit, KT.


    Verizon is expanding its offerings to animate enterprises accelerate their digital transformation to support 5G capabilities. Verizon’s Virtual Network Services will support 5G devices on Cisco’s software-defined wide zone network (SD-WAN) platform, said Shawn Hakl, senior vice president, traffic Products, Verizon.


    Cisco is working with Google Station to ensure sustainable public Wi-Fi across the globe.

    SprintCisco is assisting Sprint to deploy fresh routing technology to support Sprint’s backhaul network traffic as it prepares to launch mobile 5G service in nine cities in the first half of 2019.
