additionally: IBM combating counterfeiters with world's smallest computing device CNET

IBM Spectrum AI is allotment of a broader vogue by means of storage vendors to head all-flash and create architectures greater suited for AI workloads and machine researching. unadulterated Storage and Nvidia had paired up on AI-able infrastructure with the former targeting a erudition hub architecture. IBM SpectrumAI Brings Scalable Storage To profound researching | killexams.com real Questions and Pass4sure dumps

AI and profound getting to know are invading the commercial enterprise. NVIDIA agency is in the middle of an unprecedented run, supplying centered technology and products that enable companies to learn from their statistics. These learnings can occasions aggressive insights, recognizing unique tendencies, fueling control methods for bright infrastructure, or comfortably presenting predictive capabilities to greater manipulate the enterprise. The problem in deploying these systems is one of stability. Storage within the datacenter has developed to service the wants of mainstream commerce applications, not incredibly-parallel profound learning systems.

The constancy and effectivity of machine researching is particularly based on delivering records to the gaining erudition of pipelines with excessive-throughput and low-latency. past quite simply feeding the compute engines, ordinary tackle throughput is impacted by means of the effectivity of ingesting records from its source, as well as archiving facts once it has served its practicing functions. This becomes very real at scale, the set immense amounts of facts feed giant numbers of processing engines. extreme volumes of facts should be ingested and cleaned. genuine laptop getting to know is grievous about excessive-throughput, low-latency, minuscule obscure random I/O. fashions are archived to cloud or tape, riding the want for tall levels of scalability on the back-conclusion.

Scale is where IBM organization shines the brightest. It turned into no shock this week when IBM introduced its enormously scalable IBM Spectrum AI with NVIDIA DGX retort to solve the problems of storing and serving statistics for AI-driven analytics and computing device gaining erudition of.

    IBM SpectrumAI with NVIDIA DGX

IBM Spectrum AI with NVIDIA DGX seeks to remedy the problems inherent in storing and serving facts in the AI-driven computer studying atmosphere. It aims to resolve those issues at scale. It furthermore guarantees to seamlessly combine into an commercial enterprise workflow, leveraging its pervasive IBM Spectrum Storage suite of choices.

the unique offering is a reference architecture that combines NVIDIA DGX servers with a brand unique AI-tuned storage stack from IBM. IBM’s AI storage stack combines IBM Spectrum Scale v5 utility-defined storage with a brand unique NVMe all-flash storage answer, grievous while enabling plenary integration into the zone of IBM’s Spectrum Storage suite of products. Tying grievous of it together is an InfiniBand community powered via Mellanox expertise.

at the coronary heart of IBM’s value-add is the up to date Spectrum Scale v5 software-defined storage solution. The Spectrum Scale v5 is architected specially for AI workloads. working towards fashions for computer learning require particularly efficient metadata entry, minuscule file access, and performant small-block random I/O efficiency. here is what IBM Spectrum Scale v5 is developed to bring.

IBM’s application-described composable storage strategy makes lots of sense for organizations trying to expand an AI means over time. agencies can set up the solution with a separate tackle and seamlessly scale-out as boom is required. the flexibility additionally permits IBM’s partners to convey options that are the revise size for the conclusion client’s needs.

protecting with IBM’s enterprise and total solution seat of attention, IBM Spectrum AI seamlessly integrates with the relaxation of the IBM storage portfolio. This brings the potent means to integrate AI and machine discovering into existing storage workflows, up to and including archiving to cloud or tape.

Supplementing the up to date Spectrum Scale software is a brand unique NVMe all-flash storage solution. the brand unique storage realm promises to carry over 300TB in every 2U pile block, with 120GB/s of facts throughput in a standard rack configuration.

Scalability is at the heart of IBM’s cost proposition. it is capable of aid as much as 9 NVIDIA DGX-1 servers and three 2U NVMe glint storage arrays in a separate rack. The performance numbers that IBM shared at the announcement had been mind-blowing, displaying linear scalability and suitable-tier performance for systems with extreme numbers of GPUs.

    performance

IBM SpectrumAI with NVIDIA DGX is developed for scalable performance. the unique NVMe all-flash storage in SpectrumAI can convey throughput of 120GB/s in a rack, with over 30GB/s sustained throughput from every 2U storage array.

more fabulous than uncooked array performance is the scaling curve that's attainable with IBM’s Spectrum Scale software. IBM demonstrates proximate linear efficiency scalability while feeding as much as 72 GPUs in a separate rack. This scalability is without slow attributed to the energy of the AI-concentrated tuning that IBM set into its Spectrum Scale v5.

IBM confirmed performance numbers that in shape IBM’s Spectrum AI with NVIDIA DGX towards in a similar course architected converged options additionally constructed around NVIDIA DGX. i will’t submit the exact numbers that IBM shared with the analyst group for its ResNet practicing benchmarks. i'll jabber that no published benchmark numbers beat what IBM claims above 8 GPUs for Resnet-151 and ResNet-50, and IBM sits virtually by myself above 32 GPUs on each benchmarks.

comparing the results posted up to now for converged NVIDIA DGX options offers IBM a major performance talents in head to head confirmed facts throughput consequences. while these numbers should be validated with the aid of real-world checking out on released hardware, if it’s anywhere proximate to accurate then IBM will continue its spectacular elope of delivering right-tier storage at scale.

i enjoy that IBM is unafraid of proposing a performance evaluation. IBM additionally takes scalability one step extra than its competitors with its pleasing application-defined storage strategy. IBM’s retort is extremely competitive on the entry and mid-stage tiers, and looks as if it is going to dominate performance numbers

    The competitors

IBM SpectrumAI with NVIDIA DGX marks NVIDIA’s public fourth collaboration with a storage supplier to convey an AI and desktop getting to know reference structure. Three of those collaborations are focused on the commerce and commercial AI and laptop discovering market.

Pure Storage changed into the primary to collaborate with NVIDIA. The unadulterated Storage AIRI set the stage for what's viable when it comes to combining excessive-performance storage with NVIDIA DGX servers. Marrying Pure’s FlashBlade expertise with NVIDIA servers, unadulterated delivered unique expertise targeted without slow at solving the considerations intrinsic in AI and studying workloads. I really enjoy what unadulterated did with each AIRI and FlashBlade.

less pleasing is NVIDIA’s collaboration with NetApp . whereas NVIDIA brings stellar compute capabilities to the relationship, it appears that NetApp is without hardship bundling its current A800 all-flash array into a package with NVIDIA’s DGX-1 and a 100GB ethernet switch from Cisco, and branding the kit ONTAP AI. The retort might be exceptional to service the needs of NetApp’s current installed base, but it surely’s no longer a differentiated answer.

IBM’s SpectrumAI is differentiated from both the NetApp and unadulterated Storage choices. IBM SpectrumAI offers a plane of scalability that's just about unmatched through any one in the industry. It’s each highly speedy at scale, and it scales linearly.

past raw efficiency, i admire that IBM is bringing its commerce legacy to enable AI within the datacenter. The skill for IBM SpectrumAI to seamlessly integrate with the leisure of the Spectrum Storage suite may still create IBM’s solution an facile determination for commerce buyers.

i enjoy competition. It drives their commerce forward and forces innovation. IBM has an outstanding providing with Spectrum AI—one that raises the bar.

    Concluding strategies

past proposing just an extra indicator of NVIDIA’s near complete domination of the AI and desktop gaining erudition of house, IBM’s announcement brings both additional credibility to AI within the business, and a solution it really is built to integrate with the tools companies are already relying upon.

business it's demanding focused solutions for AI and machine studying. There is no seller more involved with the needs of enterprise computing than IBM. IBM offering this bundle to market offers further validation that computing device gaining erudition of, and machine learning at scale, is a really actual trend for enterprise buyers. It’s a vogue they should grievous watch.

the realm of AI and computing device gaining erudition of in the enterprise is in its early days. The trade is still identifying the usurp method to create the most the spectacular capabilities that are promised through the technology. Balancing storage and compute is a massive allotment of how this world will evolve.

IBM is delivering anything to be trained from with IBM SpectrumAI with NVIDIA DGX. i will be able to’t wait to procure my palms soiled and play with this beast.

Disclosure: My firm, Moor Insights & method, enjoy grievous research and analyst businesses, provides or has offered analysis, analysis, advising, and/or consulting to many excessive-tech companies within the business, including IBM, NVIDIA, NetApp, and unadulterated Storage, which may well be mentioned in this article. EMC DMX vs. Centera | killexams.com real questions and Pass4sure dumps

    The Server and StorageIO Group

I'm evaluating whether to utilize an EMC DMX or a Centera storage device for the amount of data I have. I understand DMX storage is faster than Centera in retrieval rate but more expensive. However, I don't accommodate any solid matrix to prove that. attain you accommodate any facts about the data retrieval rate for DMX vs. Centera?

Simply put, what are your storage requirements and application scenario? More specifically, how much storage attain you need now and in the future, what plane of performance is required as well as the plane of availability and types of servers or applications that will be using the storage. Are you looking for online, primary storage or secondary or near-line storage for compliance, retention, archiving or other purposes? Comparing the EMC DMX with the EMC Centera is an apple to oranges comparison at best as both are focused on different usage scenarios and service capabilities.

The EMC DMX would be for primary storage where the Centera would be for compliance, fixed content, archiving and retention among other uses. A more apples to apples comparison would be to compare the EMC DMX with the Fujitsu Eternus, IBM DS8000 as well as Hitachi (HDS USP and HP XP) storage systems. Other alternatives for primary open systems storage include EMC CLARiiON and Celerra, IBM DS4000 (Engenio/LSI), Sun, HP, 3PAR, NetApp, LeftHand, EqualLogic and ONStor among others. If your needs are for archiving and data retention based storage, in addition to the EMC Centera other solutions include those from or based on Archivas (HDS), Bycast (HP MAS & IBM MAS), IBM DR5xx and Nexsan among others.

In terms of performance characteristics and related technical comparisons buy a determine at the various vendors' websites of the above mentioned solutions. There are some benchmark data posted on the storage performance council (http://www.storageperformance.org/home) website that may be of interest, however withhold in reason that before you fade comparing different solutions based upon speeds and feeds, buy time to understand your storage and application requirements and then align the applicable technology to those needs.

Rob Pegoraro: Busy, diligent day here. I've got a plenary inbox of mail that piled up during my diminutive realm trip to the West Coast final week, and a plenary screen of questions about IMAP e-mail, Verizon Wireless EV-DO Internet access and the Mozilla Firefox Web browser. Let's procure to it....

    _______________________

    Laurel, Md.: Hi Rob -

Anticipating the question of 'when and where can I procure Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess (Ev-DO) service?' I proffer the following:

Verizon Wireless is on target to expand their BroadbandAccess network to cover one-third of their network - approximately 75 million Americans - by the quit of 2004. Today at CTIA they announced multi-million dollar agreements with Lucent and Nortel for wireless infrastructure technology for BroadbandAccess over the next two years.

BroadbandAccess will be available to commerce and individual customers in many major U.S. cities later this year, with additional markets phased in through 2005.

We accommodate not yet announced any further deployment info.

Rob Pegoraro: I reflect I know just who in Verizon Wireless PR sent this... the post helpfully addresses a topic that Verizon had yet to clarify when I wrote that column.

BTW, "CTIA" is a major wireless-telecom trade witness in Atlanta this week; determine for some coverage by the Post's Yuki Noguchi of developments at this gathering in the next few days.

Falls Church, Va.: tall quicken woes over here. DSL isn't available. Cheapest seems to be Cox Cable at $55 bucks a month -- it's not really cheaper if you add their basic service. Satellite service seems to be higher. Is there any solution that can drop broadband down to $40, or attain I accommodate to wait until Verizon gets here with its service?

Rob Pegoraro: You should check around with the other DSL providers they list in their annual survey of Internet providers. I *hope* that some of them can hook you up. Because if they can't, that is a shameful indictment of the landline telecom business. Falls Church is a dense, close-in zone that should accommodate had universal DSL access years ago, going by everything that I've heard from folks at landline telecom companies.

Chestertown, Md.: So, suppose I switch to Firefox 8.0. Since I'm now using Netscape 7.02 for both browsing and Email, would I continue to utilize it just for email? Seems kinda silly to withhold the great program on the computer just for email. Is there some course to trim away the unneeded allotment of Netscape?

I attain recall that Mozilla was furthermore working on an email application as a companion to what is now Firefox, but I don't recall the name.

Is there some email program (not Microsoft) that I could utilize and one to which I could easily transfer alot of mail settings, addresses and files emails?

    Thanks

    stugodwin-friend.ly.net

Rob Pegoraro: Yes, you could withhold Netscape just as an e-mail client. There is a mail-only Mozilla program called Thunderbird as well; I've been using it for the past few months. It's showing some trustworthy progress of its own--but it's furthermore in a much rougher status than Firefox, at a 0.5 version instead of 0.8. You need to be prepared to attain a lot more debugging and tinkering to procure it to travail right. (I've switched to it mainly because my travail accounts are grievous IMAP, and T-bird does provide pretty trustworthy IMAP support.)

    _______________________

Columbus, Ohio: No question, just a capacious thank you for suggesting I try out Mozilla Firefox. It works well. I never experienced an pains to hack into my laptop (52.0 Kb dial-in) with MS Explorer but believe an ounce of protection, etc.

I appreciate the advocate and ideas you offer. delight withhold it up.

Rob Pegoraro: Thanks. I'll attain my best!

Washington, D.C. Asks About I-Tunes, Wintel: Rob -- my daughter wants to buy an iPod -actually, the pink mini]. I am a Mac guy since 1984 -128k ruled!;], but a calamity technically.

My daughter's mom has a two-yr.-old Dell running Windows 98 -not 98SE]. It has USB, but not USB 2. It has no Firewire. The Apple website offers a Belkin Firewire card for PC.

    My questions:

    (1) Is installing the card difficult for a goof enjoy me who knows nothing about the PC world, and (2) will iTunes/iPod travail in Windows 98, without upgrading to XP -one Apple Spec sheet said 98SE okay, another just listed 2000 or XP].

    Thanks for any help!;

Rob Pegoraro: Installing the card may be tricky, and installing iTunes will be impossible--it's Win 2000/XP only. You might be able to utilize a third-party iPod program enjoy ephPod or Xplay, but then you're getting deeper into the commerce of tinkering.

Wait, how could a two-year-old Dell accommodate been shipped with Win 98 instead of XP? Something here doesn't create sense.

    _______________________

Yuma, Ariz.: Can you command me how to find out why Microsoft Internet EXplorer keeps blocking my submission of a credit card number on the ground that "THE CARD NUMBER IS INVALID"? Is there some course to over-ride this block?

Rob Pegoraro: Uh-oh. That's not a feature that exists at grievous in IE by itself. If your credit card is not, in fact, invalid, you need to check--carefully and quickly--to create positive you don't accommodate some spyware running on your computer.

(Can they procure a link to my column on that, pls.?)

Another possibility: You've got some child-protection software that's been poorly configured and is coughing up incorrect/confusing mistake messages in an attempt to preclude what it thinks is a kid uploading mom and dad's credit-card number.

    Any other guesses?

Madison, Wisc.: A tech. columnist on the Chicago Tribune gave recommendation on how to utilize the computer avoiding starting up grievous the hidden startup programs that absorb so much memory . His recommendation was to elope msconfig the repose of The recommendation I lost. Any ideas on how to immaculate out the clutter

Rob Pegoraro: "MSConfig"--a minuscule utility buried profound in the Start Menu, which is simplest to find by choosing "Run..." off the Start Menu and typing "msconfig"--lets you adjust a lot of hidden system parameters, including what runs at boot time. Click its "Startup" tab and you can cease unavoidable programs from running then.

The capacious problem, though, is that at least half of these apps will be identified only by eight-character filenames, which you'll accommodate to determine up via Google to procure any clue as to what they do. It's now been almost 10 years since Win 95 supposedly banished DOS 8.3 filenames in favor of human-readable names; how much longer are they reputed to decipher the meaning of filenames enjoy "systray" or "rnaapp" or whatever?

    _______________________

Lititz, Pa.: Dear Rob: I may be changing my ISP and want to set my email up for IMAP. The ISP I am considering will accept Outlook Express and other programs. i am not set up for Outlook Express. What attain you suggest I attain prior to switching ISP's? Should i transmogrify my current email to Outlook? I want a smooth transition so I can export my address book and email log. Thanks

Rob Pegoraro: Don't even question the ISP what mail programs they support; provided you're capable of typing in a server address into a preferences screen, the term "support" means *nothing" except "we provide specific setup recommendation for this application."

The entire point of protocols enjoy POP and IMAP is that they allow a lot of different programs to interoperate. Unless you utilize AOL or MSN or some other ISP that doesn't utilize these standard protocols, don't ever let your ISP command you what mail program to use.

    _______________________

Denver: How attain I utilize or set up tab browsing in firefox?

Rob Pegoraro: Hit Ctrl-T to open a unique tab, then drag a link onto that tab to view that page there. You can furthermore open links in unique tabs by right-clicking and selecting "Open Link in unique Tab," or--this is really neat--by selecting the link by pushing down on the scroll wheel of any mouse with a built-in wheel between the buttons.

    _______________________

Washington, D.C.: How did you find your experience with Verizon 1X service levels on the broadband cards ?

Rob Pegoraro: Much slower, of course--but still pretty usable for simpler tasks enjoy e-mail or reading mostly-text Web sites. I was pretty impressed to see that Verizon's network could hand off my connection from EV-DO to 1xRTT without a drop.

    _______________________

Asheville, N.C.: Your column left out a problem with Firefox: It can't find the cookies placed on the HDD by IE that subscription sites accommodate planted so you don't accommodate to ilk in your password or that identify you automatically. It can't find any of the other IE placed cookies of other sites, either. My start page from Excite isn't found by Firefox, nor are any of my TV schedule pages from other websites. Bummer!

Also . . . When I power down my 390X IBM laptop, running 98SE, I procure a window that says something is still running. How can I find out what it is? I can't defrag as that utility furthermore says that something is running, but neither window identifies the program.

Thanks for any advocate you may provide!

    Tim

Rob Pegoraro: Correct, the 0.8 version of Firefox only imports IE bookmarks. However, a complete settings-import option has been added to the more recent "nightly builds," the daily updates that more adventuresome folks are welcome to try. (I'm holding off on that myself; having made the switch from IE to Ffox, I don't need this added function). It should be in a .9 release soon enough, maybe next month.

What's the name of this app that won't quit at shutdown? The message you see ought to report that. If it doesn't, hit Ctrl-Shift-Esc to bring up the stint Manager, which should list it by name.

    _______________________

Millheim, Pa.: I'm having a problem with getting amplified sound from my speakers. Sound is faint and not affected by muting or raising/lowering volume. I've checked my connections, troubleshooting, even rolled back drivers. Can find no conflicts anywhere. Even substituted other speakers. The final thing I recall doing is burning a brace CDs (which turned out okay) and then a few days later just happened to notice I couldn't hear anything. It took a while to notice the problem because I don't withhold the volume up when working at night. Any ideas?

Rob Pegoraro: Hmm. Hmm. attain headphones travail alright? You're positive that the speakers are still plugged into a wall outlet that itself has not been switched off? Seems enjoy you've already done grievous the perquisite trouble-shooting steps that I'd try... this one's a real head-scratcher. Any suggestions?

    _______________________

Alexandria, Va.: final chat, I think, I was the guy who switched to Firefox because after installing MS Office XP, my IE had freaked out. Saw someone later give an facile fix for my problem.

Was having a problem with Outlook, had to start it in safe mode...what attain you know, dang MESSenger starts up in my systray. This is my real problem with MS...ever time you upgrade, etc, they fade and blow out grievous your settings. It's enjoy browser hijacking or spam...only in this case, you've actually WANT what's being offered (up to a point).

I've disabled half of the MS "clone" programs (i. e., Messenger vs. AOL IM), yet it's enjoy the Godfather III....they withhold draggin me back in. I guess my point is, until more corps. figure out that they are CUSTOMERS, not MINIONS, it seems that they are destined to procure second-rate products with second-rate service. I guess that's more of a rant than a point, but I feel better now.

    Bob

Rob Pegoraro: Rants are welcome here anytime. And this one raises a useful point--who's the real customer of grievous the stuff they procure on their computers? Quite often, it's not us. Many parts of Windows Media Player, for example, are designed for the capitalize of record labels and movie studios, not individual users.

    _______________________

Stouffville, Ont.: I currently utilize a HP officejet v40 'all-in-one' machine for faxing/printing/copying & scanning. It is a sheet fed machine and is tosomeextent limited in use. I am considering a flat bed scanner to scan photos and documents. Can you recommend a machine that incorporates trustworthy document storage software?

Rob Pegoraro: Nope, because that's not something I've tried to attain myself (my own scanning travail at home is limited enough to be served well by a diminutive HP combo printer-scanner). Any suggestions for Stouffville?

    _______________________

Centreville, Va.: Is it viable that spam filtering rules on my Mail client could be shared by other Macs and my .Mac webmail?

Rob Pegoraro: It's possible, yes, and seems a fairly obvious thing to attain as well. But Apple hasn't updated the software to provide that option.

    _______________________

    Charlotte, N.C.: Cleaning out the clutter: My Dell kept crashing from need of memory, so I finally had to summon tech advocate when AOL wouldn't run. I went back and forth between AOL and Dell, but the bottom line was Dell tech advocate had me uncheck everything on startup in msconfig and then read me the list of things to check. I made a written copy of it and withhold it proximate at hand. The only thing I've added back is the firewall...It's working okay now!;

Rob Pegoraro: Can you share that list of "safe" apps? I reflect a lot of folks here would appreciate it.

    _______________________

Vienna, Va.: Just a word of warning for those using IMAP. My wife was doing this in order to read her email at travail and at home, just as you recommended. But recently, their provider had a catastrophic RAID failure that they could not recoup from, so grievous that email saved on their server was lost! Most bigger providers should accommodate ways of recovering from this, but ours did not (yes, they will be taking their accounts elsewhere). Luckily, I had set up the account to cache grievous the emails to their local hard drive, but this setting was not the default, so if I hadn't been careful, she really wound accommodate lost everything...

Rob Pegoraro: That is a risk with IMAP. But I reflect the risk is far higher of individual users suffering data loss from computing malfunctions--most of the providers I talked to eminent that they attain backups every night, unlike nearly grievous home users (myself included).

    _______________________

Pueblo, Colo.: For a Mac devotee using Netscape and Safari, is there any reason to not try Mozilla's Firefox?

Rob Pegoraro: No--it should certainly replace Netscape quite handily. The Firefox-vs.-Safari debate is harder to settle. I really wish the two apps would finish borrowing each other's features: Safari needs Ffox's more comprehensive integrated searching and find-as-you-type, while Firefox needs Safari's forms auto-fill option and "open links from external applications in unique tabs" option.

    _______________________

Falls Church DSL Woes follow-up: Tried Covad and Verizon. Neither offered it. Something about copper wires, Verizon said, I think. It's really pretty downhearted that of grievous the bragging they do, the landline companies don't accommodate DSL available in every DC-area home. Is there really a dissimilarity in quicken between DSL and cable, appreciably, anyway?

Rob Pegoraro: The problem would be if you *don't* accommodate copper wires leading to your home, not if you do, but odds are whatever sales droids you talked to procure their scripts scrambled.

Cable modem services are usually faster in absolute numbers--but it's not a dissimilarity you're likely to notice much, since either service is more than quick enough for any real-time stuff (i.e., Web browsing and audio or video streaming).

MS Messenger always starts??? - Help: Running XP Pro, notice that MS Messenger is always starting up. I accommodate checked my startup folder it is not there. I try to exit, it says something enjoy "You accommodate a program running that requires this to be open (IE/Outlook etc)" even though I DON'T accommodate THEM OPEN.

HELP! How can I disable this from starting up every morning?

Rob Pegoraro: Fire up Messenger, select Options off its Tools menu, and uncheck grievous the "run at startup" options.

    _______________________

Washington, D.C.: Rob - I just took the plunge and got a Powerbook (a 15" with a superdrive). So far, so good! I haven't hooked up the airport basestation yet, but sensation about security. I understand it comes with a firewall so my files should be safe, but can my neighbors borrow bandwidth from me by connecting? I'm unique at this... Thanks!

Rob Pegoraro: Yes, if you leave the AirPort foundation station running in a wide-open mode, your neighbors could start borrowing your bandwidth. Your Internet utilize would furthermore be simple for anybody to eavesdrop on. But turning on encryption to secure the connection demands about two clicks, and you should be automatically prompted to attain this when you set up the foundation station.

    _______________________

Homewood, Ill.: Alas, I won't be able to be at your session in real time...hope you post it.

I appreciate the trustworthy things that you jabber bout FireFox. grievous True.

But Opera has most of it, and a entire bunch of features that FireFox hasn't gotten to (yet?), such as

    1. aliasing favorites

    2. mouse gestures and mouse buttons for forward and back (no need to return to the top of the screen)

    3. the ability to divest out fancy backgrounds and ilk so you can actually read that light ilk on sunless background monstrosities that some web designer thought was "cool". (I'm old. Sometimes my eyes don't pick up fancy too well; there are lots of us.)

just to name three that I don't want to give up.

Yes...there are some sites that don't render properly with Opera...(just as they don't with Netscape...haven't tested mozilla) so I wouldn't toss away IE.

Rob Pegoraro: Sorry, not a fan of Opera--not with that mess of an interface. I mean, four different "reload" commands?

(Note to grievous Opera fans: I know that 7.5 is reputed to immaculate up things. But until that version gets shipped, the browser still presents one of the worst UIs I've seen in a Web browser... with the viable exception of the one mentioned in the next posting.)

    _______________________

    You were right, I was wrong - DC: But only kinda perquisite and kinda wrong!;

I posted final week about how remarkable IE was and you blasted it, so I looked into the alternative browsers enjoy Firefox.

I adore tabbed browsing!; But Firefox renders things differently from IE, and let's visage it, the web is optimized for IE. Plus Firefox can be needlessly intricate and confusing.

So -- and I am NOT a paid spokesposter here -- I found a freeware tabbed browser that sits on top of IE, but adds many advanced browsing features that Mozilla has.

    In other words, IE does the rendering, but this "skin" (called Avant Browser) does the rest. And though it's crashed a brace times since I've installed it, it's a heck of a lot less than IE and IT DOESN'T CRASH WINDOWS!;!;

It's still in beta, and it's not perfect, but the imperfections are shallow and infrequently encountered, and I reflect they're updated fairly regularly anyway.

    (Channeling Scarlett O'Hara): With Gates as my witness, I'll never utilize IE again!;

Rob Pegoraro: selfsame problem: AvantBrowser (and CrazyBrowser and myIE 2) furthermore suffer from developers who apparently couldn't jabber no to any option. Just determine at the stacked toolbars in the screen shot that graces its home page (www.avantbrowser.com). Sorry, but editing is just as needful in software progress as it is for my own sorry prose.

Washington, D.C.: Adding to your list, Starpower (erols, rcn et al) doesn't 'do' IMAP.

In re: Spam blocking, Starpower along with Verizon are doing a high-level 'spam blocking' that is really bad. I elope a listserve for my kids' school here in DC (Lafayette, the one that had the fire final week), and almost grievous of those with Starpower and Verizon domain names are NOT getting their mail from their listserve. It's random, though, as some are getting it and others aren't. Tech advocate at both places hasn't been able to help, so we're sort-of stuck.

While I really attain applaud ISP's attempts to originate the tide of spam, these plain wide sweeping solutions don't necessarily work.

Rob Pegoraro: Thanks for the report. I'm furthermore hearing of problems with occasional issues sending mail to/from AOL, for much the selfsame reason. These false-positives show to procure fixed after a few days or maybe a week. If that sounds enjoy your experience, delight procure in touch (rob at twp.com).

    _______________________

Washington, D.C.: Resolution to My Mom's E-Mac failure.

The problem, as it happened, was not the well-publicized Rastar shift one, but rather one I was told by the service folks is just as common -- an intermittent or failed logic board. These service people accommodate seen lots of these boards fail within 6 months of coming out of the box.

So grievous is well with 80 yr ragged Mom's e-Mac, although I still believe Apple's response was terrible. The service guys said that they procure diminutive information -from- Apple. They accommodate to regularly fade to a specially designated Apple website to see what's new.

Rob Pegoraro: This is an update to something posted two weeks ago. I'm joyful to see that things finally got fixed--but annoyed to hear that it took so long. Replacing a logic board is almost a default repair in these kinds of situations, and it should accommodate been done almost overnight.

    _______________________

High Point, N.C.: There are some alternatives to downloading and using the Messenging Programs from Yahoo, AOL, and Microsoft, which usually are much more friendly in how they want to start up etc.

My personal suggestion is Gaim: http://gaim.sourceforge.net but perquisite now there are problems with yahoo's unique authentication scheme, so it doesn't travail remarkable for that. it is under active progress and has some very frosty features that the other clients then picked up.

Rob Pegoraro: I've tried Gaim myself. To the issues that tall Point noted, I'd add that it looks and feels enjoy the Linux port that it is--the UI has a lot of harsh edges and just looks repulsive in general once you procure past the first screen.

    _______________________

    Washington, D.C.: Rob,

I want to procure a web page up - just something where I can post photos and consuming links. I accommodate no thought where to start. Any recommendations for a novice?

Rob Pegoraro: Start with your ISP, which probably offers some Web space for free. Another option is using Yahoo, which definitely does.

    _______________________

Washington, D.C.: I just got an Ipod and noticed that unless my computer is connected to the internet when I try to rip songs from a CD I don't procure the song names and CD title. Isn't this information coded on the CD somewhere?

Rob Pegoraro: Nope--iTunes, just enjoy other music programs, looks up this data automatically by matching the CD's pattern of track times to an online database. That's why blend CDs you've done yourself aren't recognized in this way.

Silver Spring, Md.: Just a word about auto-fill. I'm not crazy about having the browser provide that service (may be the result of MS paranoia). For just a brace of bucks Robo-form gives me more autofill capability than I would ever need and, unless, they're REALLY tricky, leaves it grievous under my control.

Rob Pegoraro: Agreed. That's why I enjoy how Safari handles it (which, in turn, is based on the feature Microsoft added to the Mac version of IE about 5 years ago, but which was never included in IE for Windows): Unless you click the auto-fill button, nothing gets pasted into forms for you.

Otherwise, when you start typing into fields with titles that match the auto-fill database (name, address, phone number, e-mail, etc.), Safari will proffer to fill in that info, but you can override it by continuing to ilk something else.

San Jose, Calif.: Thank you for your timely article on IMAP vs. POP. As a professional IT person I accommodate a question about one line in your article:

Microsoft's Outlook and Qualcomm's Eudora suffer from strangely sloppy IMAP support.

Could you be more specific on how "sloppy" Outlook is with IMAP? I procure a lot of questions from home users about personal email programs and would enjoy to know kindly of problems might crop up.

Rob Pegoraro: The principal shape of sloppiness is that Outlook doesn't delete messages properly--they still show in a message list, but in a strikethrough, grayed-out font. They don't disappear until you select "Purge Deleted Messages" from one of the menus.

Technically, this is an accurate portrayal of what happens on the server, but it suggests to the user that they haven't deleted things "right." The better course is to crawl the deleted messages to a Trash folder, where they don't procure in the course but can still be inspected before you blank the trash.

    Thanks!; Marg

Rob Pegoraro: I was just in your neck of the woods final week (my trip wasn't grievous work, OK? :)... a regular Google search returns a list of sites that Google thinks matches your query. An "I'm sentiment lucky" search takes you directly to the site that Google thinks is most relevant, without the wait to see a page of search results.

Rob Pegoraro: Yes, some financial institutions play that game, although I haven't approach across that issue myself in my own almost IE-free browsing. Which ones are at fault in your case?

If you want to allow pop-ups from specific sites, grievous you need to attain is provide the domain name of the site that launches the pop-ups, not the address of each pop-up.

Yeah, I found the abundant toolbars a diminutive daunting at first, but again, it's in beta, plus you can customize them out of existence.

Right now I've got a compact setup with only the features I utilize regularly. The repose I attain with keystrokes or that remarkable invention, mouse gestures. (It furthermore helps that I accommodate an IntelliMouse with those extra buttons. Really helps.)

Rob Pegoraro: Ooh, these are the two worst excuses in software development.

"It's in beta": Bzzt, wrong answer! A beta version is reputed to be feature-complete, which means you should accommodate the interface finished by then--that way, the beta testers can focus on finding bugs instead of fixing features. Simplicity isn't something you can airbrush on in the final months of development; it has to start early on.

"You can customize...": Wrong again! Most users never touch the defaults. The default interface should be the one usurp for grievous users; the geekier stuff can safely be left off, since the geekier users will know to determine for it in the options/settings/preferences windows.

If I did and I had that selfsame problem, I'd question the Wachovia folks why their site is so far behind the competition; American Express's site, for example, works perfectly in non-IE browsers.

I will be interested in trying the Firefox Browser and other third party s/w, but only when I accommodate more self-confidence in my current configuration. Thanks for any feedback.

Rob Pegoraro: Not positive what might be the issue. System Idle Process on this Windows 2000 machine can easily elope that high, but it does drop down when other apps are in use. washingtonpost.com: Read the Post's recent review of RSS readers, and check out washingtonpost.com's RSS feeds page.

Rob Pegoraro: I agree; I went through a lot of different RSS clients before settling on SharpReader myself. I decided that the .Net framework requirement was acceptable, that it ran swiftly enough on my computers, and that once I copied its folder over the C:\Program Files\, I wouldn't accommodate to reflect about its need of an installer.

Rob Pegoraro: I reflect I can retort most of the questions perquisite here... namely, since grievous the data is stored on a hard drive, not glint memory, you shouldn't lose any of it (although syncing it up before sending it out for any service is just a trustworthy idea, period) and that there are no technical hazards unique to a battery replacement (as in, the tech doing the service could drop a soldering iron by mistake, but that could happen anytime you've got the case cracked open).

I'm not positive there would be much to review--or much to review unless they did this a *lot* of times.

Assuming you actually attain rescue grievous your travail to My Documents or a sub-folder of that--which you should do, or you'll never be able to find the things again--you can safely concentrate on backing up that folder, along with your browser bookmarks (it's simplest to utilize your browser's "export" command to dump a copy of them into My Documents).

    Thanks for your help!

Rob Pegoraro: If you're not positive what mail program you're using, then it almost always is Outlook Express, the default in Windows. utilize the File menu's export command to copy out your mailboxes and other settings, crawl those exported files to the unique computer, then utilize OE's import command (also in the File menu) to tug in the exported data.
